I'll teach the present tense here.. Don't even try to learn this all at once. This is going to be long.

So, if you didn't already know, there are four time tenses in Finnish (Present, Imperfect, Perfect and Pluperfect) and four moods (Indicative, Imperative, Potential and Conditional.) Verbs are divided into five groups by their infinitive marker.

INFINITIVE
In English it is done by adding "to" in front of the verb. In Finnish there are five kinds of infinitive endings, that also affects to the conjugation of the verb.

Type 1 - Ends with two vowels
Type 2 - Ends with da or dä
Type 3 - Ends with la, lä or sta, stä
Type 4 - Ends with ata, ätä, uta, ota
Type 5 - Ends with ita or itä

Before you start learning the conjugations etc, you should know the personal endings.

Minä - n
Sinä - t
Hän - VV (two vowels in a row)
Me - mme
Te - tte
He - vat,vät

In Finnish you use the personal ending to show the actor, while in English you just add the pronoun.

I play
Pelaan

So, this means that you don't have to include the personal pronoun to the verb (except with hän and he.)

Minä pelaan = Pelaan
Sinä pelaat = Pelaat
Hän pelaa = Pelaa- No, this is the imperative form "Play!"



VERB TYPE 1

Verb type 1 ends with two vowels.

Some example verbs:
Tanssia - to dance
Itkeä - to cry
Laulaa - to sing

Now, to get the stem where to add the endings, you have to take the last vowel off.

Tanssia -> Tanssi
Itkeä -> Itke
Laulaa -> Laula

...then just add the personal ending

TANSSIA - TO DANCE
I dance - (Minä) tanssin
You dance - (Sinä) tanssit
S/He dances - Hän tanssii
We dance - (Me) tanssimme
You pl. dance - (Te) tanssitte
They dance - He tanssivat

For 'He / Hän' you just repeat the vowel the stem ends with.

VERB TYPE 2

Verbs belonging to this conjugation type end with da or dä.

Example verbs:
Juoda - To drink
Syödä - To eat
Lyödä - To hit
Nähdä - To see
Tehdä - To do

The infinitive marker is dropped out before adding anything.

No lenghtening of the last vowel in the 3rd person singular.

JUODA - TO DRINK
I drink - (Minä) juon
You drink - (Sinä) juot
S/he drinks - Hän juo
We drink - (Me) juomme
You pl. drink - (Te) juotte
They drink - He juovat

For "hän.." you just take off the infinitive marker.

EXERCISE:

There are two very important irregular verbs in this group;
Nähdä - To see
Tehdä - To do
These are not conjugated in the same way as others.

NÄHDÄ - TO SEE
I see - (Minä) näen
You see - (Sinä) näet
S/he sees - Hän näkee
We see - (Me) näemme
You pl. see - (Te) näette
They see - He näkevät

TEHDÄ - TO DO
I do - (Minä) teen
You do - (Sinä) teet
S/He does - Hän tekee
We do - (Me) teemme
You pl. do - (Te) teette
They do - He tekevät



VERB TYPE 3

These verbs end with la,lä or sta,stä.

Example verbs:
Opiskella - to study
Mennä - to go
Juosta - to run
Nousta - to rise/wake up
Ajatella - to think
Tulla - to come

To get the stem, just drop the infinitive marker and add e before the personal ending.

For third singular person, just lenghten the last vowel.

OPISKELLA - TO STUDY
I study - (Minä) opiskelen
You study - (Sinä) opiskelet
S/he studies - Hän opiskelee
We study - (Me) opiskelemme
You pl. study - (Te) opiskelette
They study - He opiskelevat

Verbs ending in sta or stä are conjugated the same way.

NOUSTA - TO RISE UP
I rise - (Minä) nousen
You rise - (Sinä) nouset
S/he rises - Hän nousee
We rise - (Me) nousemme
You pl. rise - (Te) nousette
They rise - He nousevat

Verb "Mennä" is conjugated the same way as well

MENNÄ - TO GO
I go - (Minä) menen
You go - (Sinä) menet
S/he goes - Hän menee
We go - (Me) menemme
You pl. go - (Te) menette
They go - He menevät

The verb "Juosta" is a bit irregular.

JUOSTA - TO RUN
I run - (Minä) juoksen
You run - (Sinä) juokset
S/he runs - Hän juoksee
We run - (Me) juoksemme
You pl. run - (Te) juoksette
They run - He juoksevat

VERB TYPE 4

Verbs belonging to this conjugation type ends with ata,ätä,uta or ota.

Some example verbs..
Pelata - to play, to act
Herätä - to wake up
Haluta - to want

Before adding the personal endings, drop the last vowel and replace t with a or ä (depending on the vowels)

HALUTA - TO WANT
I want - (Minä) haluan
You want - (Sinä) haluat
S/he - Hän aluaa
We want - (Me) haluamme
You pl. want - (Te) haluatte
They want - He haluavat

HERÄTÄ - TO WAKE UP
I wake up - (Minä) herään
You wake up - (Sinä) heräät
S/he wakes up - Hän herää
We wake up - (Me) heräämme
You pl. wake up - (Te) heräätte
They wake up - He heräävät

VERB TYPE 5

These verbs ends with ita or itä.

Examples:
Mainita - To mention
Tarvita - To need
Häiritä - To disturb

Drop the last a, ä and add se before the endings.

TARVITA - TO NEED
I need - (Minä) tarvitsen
you need - (Sinä) tarvitset
S/he needs - Hän tarvitsee
We need - (Me) tarvitsemme
You pl. need - (Te) tarvitsette
They need - He tarvitsevat

Minä tanssin kanssasi (kanssa=with)
Haluat juoda vettä
Tarvitset häntä
Hän herää huomenna, muttei (=mutta ei) tänään.


NEGATIVE VERBS

To make the verb negative, you have to add the negative word before the verb.
The correct form of the verb you get by deleting the suffix.

Minä en
Sinä et
Hän ei
Me emme
Te ette
He eivät

I drink = Minä juon
I don't drink = Minä en juo

He dances = Hän tanssii
He doesn't dance = Hän ei tanssi

and so on.
