Default Lesson 13 - Time

And finally I'm enough inspired to make a new lesson

So, asking time in Finnish.. you should remember the numbers.. and you do, right?

Clock is.. = Kello on..
It is.. = Se on..
Half .. = Puoli ..
Quarter to .. = Varttia vaille/vailla ..
Quarter past .. = Vartin yli ..
Past = Yli
To ..*something* = Vaille/Vailla ...
Minute = Minuutti
Second = Sekunti (pronounce sekuntti!)
Hour = Tunti

There you have basically everything you need.

REMEMBER, everytime you count something, you put the noun into partitive.

So, two dogs = kaksi koiraa and three minutes = kolme minuuttia.

So when you want to say "three minutes over seven", you say "kolme minuuttia yli seitsemän."

Now, let's make it clearer:
2 - Kaksi.
2:05 - Viisi yli kaksi.
2:10 - Kymmenen yli kaksi.
2:15 - Vartin yli kaksi.
2:20 - Kaksikymmentä yli kaksi.
2:30 - Puoli kolme.
2:40 - Kahtakymmentä vailla kolme.
2:45 - Varttia vailla kolme.
2:50 - Kymmentä vailla kolme.

When the clock is 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, we say "Tasan..." as "Exactly.."
Kello on tasan viisi = Clock is five.

Anteeksi, paljonko kello on? Excuse me, what's the time?
Se on tasan kaksi. It is two o'clock.
Okei, kiitos. Okey, thankyou.

EXERCISE:

Translate:
Clock is three to eleven.
It is quarter past five.
2:56
9:24
11:59
12:00
4:01

Write down a short conversation where someone first asks a time and then gets to know the other one a bit better (place where s/he lives, age etc.)
