Default Lesson 2 - Greetings/Tervehdyksiä

GREETINGS

English - Finnish - Spoken Language

Hello - Terve - Hei
Bye bye - Näkemiin (rather formal..) - Hei hei / Heippa / Moikka
How are you? - Kuinka voit? - Mitä kuuluu?
I'm fine thanks - Ihan hyvää, kiitos - <--
And you? - Entä sinä? - Ja sulle?
I'm fine too - Myöskin hyvää - <--
Good morning! - Hyvää huomenta - <--
Good afternoon! - Hyvää päivää - <--
Good evening! - Hyvää iltapäivää - <--

next given only in formal language
Do you speak English/Finnish? - Puhutko Englantia/Suomea?
No I don't - En puhu.
I speak.. - Puhun..
Arabic/Spanish/Berber/Chinese/French - Arabiaa/Espanjaa/Berberiä/Kiinaa/Ranskaa
I speak a little Finnish - Puhun vähän suomea.

Personal pronouns
So, there are no genders in Finnish (yay :D), so we don't
either have tons of personal pronouns..

English - Finnish - [Spoken language]

I - Minä - Mä/Mää/Mie/Myö
You - Sinä - Sä/sää/sie
He/She - Hän - Hän
We - Me - Me/Myö
You pl. - Te - Te/Työ
They - He - He

In spoken language you don't usually use the word 'hän'.. you say 'se' (=it) instead. for example:
She bought a book - Hän osti kirjan (formal finnish) - Se osti kirjan (Spoken)

There are no grammatical articles in Finnish.. so the word "talo" means both "a house" and "the house". however, if you want to say "he went to the house", you'd just say "hän meni taloon" * and you want to stress that it's a CERTAIN house, you can say "hän meni siihen taloon".

*Taloon, the ending is similar to english word 'to'.
Finland = suomi
To Finland = suomeen
School = Koulu
to school = kouluun.

the vowels of the ending depends on the vowels of the word. (more about the vowels in the next lesson )

Have fun learning
