These are the consonants of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).
I circled the Arabic consonants in pencil and highlighted the English consonants in yellow. You can see that there are some letters that both languages have in common and some that are unique to their own language. I was introduced to the IPA through my linguistics unit. I am new to it, so I know that this picture may not be fully complete, but I hope it helps. For me, I can now pin point the exact letters in Arabic that I will have problems with (because they are not a part of my native language). I may have missed some, Please Correct Me and I Will Update This. ![]() The English Parts In green are the phonemes that are unique to English (not found in Arabic) Stops: [p] as in 'sip' [t] ت as in 'tan, thyme' [k] ك as in 'kill, cull, truck, Christmas' [b] ب as in 'big' [d] د as in 'dog' [g] as in 'gay' Nasals: [m] م as in 'mum, some' [n] ن as in 'none' but not as in 'bank, or hymn' [N] as in 'singing, bank' - represents the symbol that looks like an 'n' with a tail pointing to the left in the above IPA chart Fricatives: [s] س as in 'sat, pass' [z] ز as in 'zoo, cars, busy, xenon' [f] ف as in 'fat, staff, elephant, rough' [v] as in 'vat, leaves' [T] ث as in 'thin, path' - [T] represents the Greek symbol theta in the above IPA chart [D] ذ as in 'that', breathe' - [D] represents the backwards '6' with a line through the top of it in the above IPA chart [S] ش as in 'shin, rash, fish' - [S] represents the elongated 'S' in the above IPA chart (it's a Greek Sigma) [Z] جas in 'vision, measure, genre' - [Z] represents the weird looking '3' in the above IPA chart [h] ه as in 'horse, behind' but not as in 'hour, show, thin, rough' Affricates: [tS] as in 'chin, church' - represents the 'l' with a small curved line through it in the above IPA chart [dZ] as in 'judge' - represents the 'l' and [Z] attached to each other in the above IPA chart Approximants: [l] ل as in 'love, feeling' - [l] is called a lateral approximant [w] و as in 'wide' - similar to the vowel in 'bush' [¨] as in 'road, carry, hurt, car, fear' - [¨] represents the the upside down 'r' in the above IPA chart [j] ي as in 'you' - similar to the vowel in 'beat' Last edited by bigbossmatt; 08-04-2007 at 01:59 AM. |

Thanks!
I'll correct it right now. This is what I have done: Swapped: ذ as in 'that' & ث as in 'thin, path' (so it is now correct) [h] ه as in 'horse, behind' but not as in 'hour, show, thin, rough' - Corrected this and left out ح Put ج in [Z] جas in 'vision, measure, genre' - [Z] represents the weird looking '3' in the above IPA chart This was previously a green coloured line, and I made this line green: [dZ] as in 'judge' - represents the 'l' and [Z] attached to each other in the above IPA chart Last edited by bigbossmatt; 08-04-2007 at 02:03 AM. |

I think it's good that way
![]() And I also think I should introduce myself to this IPA chart. I've been introduced to many languages, but a universal way to write them might come in handy...

Arabic language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I found this. It is better than my attempt could ever be. I couldn't edit my post, but if I could I would make it better or link to this wikipedia version. |

I have a question for you, maybe you've posted that somewhere else, but how are you learning arabic? All by yourself?
