Default Arabic and dialects

Salam alaykum

I have had this little conversation with Jonne about arabic dialects, and there was one thing even Jonne (with all his knowledge of arabic languages) was not sure about : Is Egyptian dialect the closest to fus7a than any other arabic dialect ?
Just wondering.

Hi Nadine
Actually, the answer is no, Egyptian dialect is not the closet to Fos7a, it's just the easiest Arabic dialect, and is understood by all other Arabs, but this doesn't make it the closed to fos7a, in the matter of fact, you can't say which dialect is the closest, as they all have words from Fos7a in away or another, you know it just depends on how you see the issue, for me, I find Shami dialect so clear and easy and have a lot of Fos7a words, Moroccan dialect is kinda difficult but it has so many fos7a words in it, but to be honest I think that Khalegy dialect specially in Saudi Arabia is the closest to Fos7a, even though I tend to understand Shami and Egyptian dialects more.

Salam aleykum, Alex
I think you are right, because after all, if we look in the past, historic hotbed of Arabic people initially was located in the Arabian peninsula. Which can also be called island actually, island of sand, may be. The language proper comes from the Arabian desert.
That's why intelectuals in the past used to consult people who live in desert.
It's different from other cultures in that that it started spreading from empty quarters of deserts to very densely populated areas of Mesopotamia and Egyptian Nile valley and Palestine and beyond.
In other cultures it is more vice versa - it starts off from densely populated areas to lands with less and less population.
I think such is the unique character of the Arabic.
In terms of numerous mutually unintelligible dialects I think there is no reason to worry, compare this to Chinese my great neighbours, here, how many Chinese languages are there in China? Plenty, and they don't understand each other when they speak, but when they read they easily understand.
