That prediction has been around for a long time, but people are reconsidering as to the actual meaning of the Mayan calendar stopping on that date. Mayans believed that the world has been destroyed and created many times, that it is each time wiped out by water or by fire. It is likely they predicted a massive catastrophe (my bet would be placed on the Yellowstone super caldera erupting). This does not mean the world will necessarily end, but perhaps life as we know it---in a modernized sense. The caldera in Yellowstone is thousands of years overdue and a catastrophe as such would bottleneck the human race. Although the immediate problem would affect primarily the united states, the sheer amount of rock spewed into the atmosphere, it is said, will block the sun for anywhere from three to seven years. This means that, aside from a deep freeze, plants will not be able to grow for that period of time and there will be a massive starvation to those who are left.

But do I think the world will end? It depends on how you take it. The Christians believe the world will literally end. Perhaps not, though. I see that as unlikely. Maybe the world as we know it, with catering businesses and free trade and economic prosperity. Perhaps we will be driven to behave like animals again. But in 2012? Again, unlikely. People believe that in 2012 there might be the beginning of another pole shift, or some other dramatic happening like Earth aligning in the center of our galaxy and that both might have catastrophic consequences.

Philosophically speaking, the world will end someday. You see, as yin and yang are opposites which make a whole and both are equally necessary, we can piece together that there is no beginning without an end, and this makes up the whole of the world and both of those things are necessary. Things begin specifically to end someday, just like our lives, which are lived constantly facing death. You must simply accept this and be prepared when the time comes to move on. But if that is in four years or four thousand years or four million years, we don't know.
