Art is immediately perceived through senses, though it leads to reflexion and thought. 1984, by Orwell, isn't a mere political essay, and on the other side, what you see when you see a Rothko, for instance, isn't just forms and colors. How, and why? What can we deduce about art's nature? What does this difference show and tell about ourselves?

Can it possibly be both? Our senses cause us to feel pleasure, yet our mind enjoys an exercise of thought. I think neither mind nor senses like to be idle, and art provides a stimuli for both.

"Art" is, to say the least, a very generous container: literature, music, painting, sculpture etc. are, all, included in this concept, each of them favourising a certain sense over another. One's senses and thought do not perceive and translate them all in the same way. The impact of literature, for example, may be more a mind's joy for some, as long as the impact of music or the one of visual arts addresses more to one's senses.
Generally speaking, I think that each of us is somehow tuned or genetically programmed if you wish, to be more sensitive to one form of art more than to another. It's a kind of a special flavour that's spicing our lives .Maybe we're born with it and all we need is to rediscover what we really like. |

Only death is certain...

Art is just one of those things, which helps us to survive on this planet. I simply cannot live without art. Art is to reinvigorate our senses and our mind (both), because there is a kind of a inseparable conection between what we see, hear, feel, smell and what we are thinking about. We are thinking about our impressions, about our observations, and so on... so... Well, we can think without any external stimulus but I think we should enrich our mental life all the time. Not only for some of the "highest" reasons, but also for our simple pleasure.
What do I think about Mark Rothko's works? And what do I feel about them? It depends on the painting. Some colors make me feel good, safe and powerless, brings good associations and some brings bad memories, makes me angry or dissapointed. And than I'm wondering about my feelings, I analize them, and create a new meanings. And this makes me fulfilled... This is the meaning of art for me. In other words - if you want to have a great mental orgasm you simply need art... |
