Thank you all for your answers on this subject so far.
I tend to believe that silence is more of a concept than a reality - the pair concept of "noise", perhaps, since we are so deepened in a world of duality (left/right, night/day, good/bad and so on). I also think that physical silence is very subjective, since it depends mostly on the limitations of our sensorial perception: what our hearing cannot bring anymore to consciousness, the hearing of many animals or some specially designed mechanisms - can still register. And last but not least, silence seems difficult to attain even in ourselves for extended periods of time because we tend to talk inwardly to ourselves, since our mind is, well, restless and our thoughts are just a heartbeat away. |

well you could define it acoustically as well.. as absence of the waves that are creating sound
you're right that the fact we can't perceive it doesn't mean there is no sound...

That 's my idea too about silence. Silence according to me, doesn't mean there are no waves . I think silence gives place to anorther kind of waves. For instance in a conversation, silence at a precise moment can say a lot about what the person is feeling. And the feelings are made of waves or they creat the waves that we perceive. But it isn't sound. That's bringing us to the idea that the silence is probably filled with our thoughts, our comprehension about things and this comprehension is creating the emotions which are creating the waves of silence. I have been said recently (in a chatting conversation !) that even when I say nothing, it means a lot to the person I am chatting with. And many feelings are going through these silences, because these silences are setting in a conversation not at any time. And this precise moment define the emotions that are filling these silences. ![]() Wow !! I hope you can understand what I am talking about. But for sure you all have good ideas about silence ! It is nice to have different point of view in fact. |

Silence! Something i would like to HEAR during this exams time! But unfortunetly all i can hear is the noise of the neighbours, cars, flights... Silence, for me, is a peacefull moment, serenity, when you can hear what you think (yes that's it), you cannot have this! So to have that you take 'quies' lool
