Scientifically speaking, silence is a period where no 'sound', or vibration filtering through the ear drum, is happening. However, from a philosophical point of view, I would say that silence is the sound of enlightenment. My father used to tell me that he never really talked in his youth. He always listened. He listened, and listened, until he knew something to talk about much later on in life. It is the downfall of a Philosopher to talk before he listens. And silence is the proof that he is listening.

LOL listening is a good way to learn... lots of young people I meet try to present themselves as "knowing" persons and just miss the point. Much more interesting to exchange with a "listening" person than a "telling" one

As a "would-be" clinical psychologist I need to know how to listen to what do people say. Sometimes it is so good to be a listener, and sometimes, it's not. You need to be prepared for everything. Sometimes people just insult me ( e.g. brain injury, especially the frontal lobe, can be the reason ) and I need to listen to it without any emotional reaction and just do my job..., and in those cases, better to follow the "silence". But there are situations, well, even very often, when I need to speak a lot, describe a lot, try to make someone understood something. It's very hard sometimes... One is for sure - the silence can be louder than any voice. You just have to listen to it carefully with all your senses.
