Descartes has never "entered" solipsism!!!
He'd pressuposes god and himself to "attest" the world. He had never said there is only "me, myself & I" ; It would spoil the idea of god and the idea of world which has been, beyond the shadow of a doubt, found by Descartes in his own mind. And, his philosophy was created to confirm that THERE IS A WORLD, THAT IT EXISTS. This is why Descartes needed a god. So, where is this solipsism? |

The definition of solipsism states: Solipsism (Latin: solus, alone + ipse, self) is the philosophical idea that "My mind is the only thing that I know exists." Solipsism is an epistemological or metaphysical position that knowledge of anything outside the mind is unjustified. The external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist. In the history of philosophy, solipsism has served as a skeptical hypothesis. The complete quote is: "(ego) dubito, (ego) ergo cogito, (ego) cogito, (ego) ergo sum, (ego) sum, ergo Deus est" I did not say that Descartes has intended to enter solipsism, nore that his philosophy was built on "to confirm that THERE IS A WORLD, THAT IT EXISTS". I just said that is what he got by using the pronoun "ego", which means I. Therefor, he concluded that God existed trough his own being. He made a statement from which he couldn't "escape". Solipsism is a doctrine. He didn't designate himself a solipsist, he was designated.

Well, I think that there was a time when Descartes has been cosidered as a solipsist, but today there is no doubt that he was not a solipsist. But the idea of god in his philosophy was just a metaphysical need. Without god Descartes metaphysics would be easy to rebut.
Yes, his priority was to confirm the existence of the world and and his own existence. He wanted to create an undeniable metaphysics; a system better than any other, based on his Method. Descartes was very presumptuous ![]() And he did doubt in everything... with one exception - logics. He did not question the law of noncontradiction... In his arguments for the existence of god, god is "used" as a kingpin; god was used as an instrument. |
