A quick reply to the end of your answer. You cannot say that God exists for some people, and doesn't for the other; neither can you say that It changes from one to the other. For the idea of God is the one of universality. I mean, if you believe in God, you believe is the one for all (even if they can fail). But I will explain myself later. By the way, where do you live? Are you studiing or teaching philosophy?

Your analysis of the Husserlian way to understand could have been quite right. But what I meant is simplier : for Husserl, a thing exists if it stays the same throughout all the ways it can be thought. But God is as different as the believers (you expressed it very clearly). So...

You're welcome, ferenk, I really enjoyed this discussion. Et oui, je comprends le francais, je le parle (s'il le faut vraiment ) et je l'ecrit (sans trop de fautes d'ortographe), but since this is an English discussion forum I guess it would be rather impolite to continue this conversation in French. So, if you prefer to take it elsewhere on this forum it's ok by me. And it is just as well if you wish to continue it here, in English.

So, I'd like to understand how you can believe if you doubt upon God's existence. Is your faith a psychological fact?

I think I'll better take it step by step, ferenk, to avoid missing to answer to too many questions. Not that I would have all the answers, though... It's just a spread of wings under the favorable current of this question with a million answers... or, perhaps, with just one. The Big One .

The way I see it, there are mainly 4 different levels or ways of dealing with the existence of God.
On one level, some people think/believe He exists.
On another, some think/believe He doesn't exist.
On the third one, some more cannot yet make up their minds, they still wonder about it.

From the perspective of these 3 levels the idea of God changes indeed from one level to another and, even more, from an individual's perspective of God to another's. I mean by that that people tend to "imagine" God somehow either they believe in Him, doubt of Him or discard His existence altogheter.

On the fourth level, one actually knows that God exists. There is a type of knowledge that overrides the intellect, a direct knowledge acquired by revelation or divine inspiration, if you wish.
