I posted a thread as my Fiancee wants a tattoo of my name in arabic and haveso far only had one reply, and that was a 'negative' one in respect that they won't translate it for me because it's against Islam. I can respect this if it is against your religion or principles.
Like previous people have stated some people don't mind and some do, and we should respect thier choice.
I've recently come back from Sharm el Sheikh and people over there were so friendly and so helpful. In fact many people offered to translate our names for us rather then us asking. Unfortunately we have misplaced the translation of my name, hence me asking on here.

I don't know if it's important for the others but this is the reason :Tattos that stay for ever because they stay deep in the skin are forbiden, because they are a way of changing the creation of Allah, this changing is not allowed in Islam, so logically if I don't like a thing for myself I wouldn't like it for another, and helping someone in a tatoo (if I know that it's gonna be a tatoo), is like getting it for myself.

I'm not going to have arabic tattooed on me. the reasons are because I am not an arab. the arabic language has no special meaning to me other than I chose to study it.

When caucasian people in Australia have traditional chinese tattoos, I ask why? Even if the tattoo means something to them when it is translated (like a special phrase, or their husbands name). But then what has traditional chinese writing got to do with you?

Why not write the same phrase in your own language?

I am not religious so I don't care whether or not it is against islam to get a tattoo of anything or even the word Allah.

I agree with you bigbossmatt, people who get tattoos in a different language, they do it maybe because what they write is not gonna be understood by all people, because if they write it in thier own language, it gonna look normal, or even without importance, as an Arabic, when I see someone tattooed in Arabic, I just see words written in a body while the normal place of words is in a book or something like this.

I'm not tattooed, but if ever I would get one, I think it would be a drawing of something that has a special meaning for me relating to a step in my life. (ex: getting a gecko tattooed to symbolize the months I passed in Thailand). But I don't think it would happen any time soon, I prefer not having anything permanent written on my skin

I would like to clear up something. Having people refuse to translate something is their very own right, this is after all a volunteering forum and nothing makes anybody translate something against their well. And it's not because some do not translate something for a reason or another that it makes them less nice, or mean.
Tatoos are forbidden in Islam, and there is an argument that helping to do something that is forbidden (even for non-Muslims) is like doing it. This is the main reason why most Arabic speaking members here (who are mostly Muslim by the way) prefer simply not to translate tatoos requests than "take the risk".
For my part, I explicitly refuse to translate the word Allah for a tatoo, but I do not think that it's my business if someone gets his name tatooed from a translation of mine... But as I said, I just prefer not to bother for the moment.
