when i was on holiday in egypt one of the barman took a shine to my lil sister, it was funny and he kept calling her 'kakoota' (thats just spelt phonetically) which he said meant 'baby chicken'! i was wondering if anyone knew the correct spelling for 'kakoota' in arabic/egyptian!? and also if it does actually mean 'baby chicken'? x

It's katkoota: كتكوتة
And yes, the guy is honest, it means little chicken. Now it's nothing strange or odd, not just in Egypt, but in many Arabic countries we call kids katakeer (plural form) in a an affectionate way. Teachers call us so as well in primary school. It's a lovely cute word . |

How funny!
At first, I found weird that "little chicken" is an affectionate word, but I think of it, and we say the same thing in French "mon petit poussin" ![]()

That's it! It's more appropriate translated into French than English. I think it might sound a little bit weird in English translated as "little chicken", that's why I wanted to make sure to clarify the whole cultural context.
