Thankyou ever so much Asminha and Xpsal for the replies

Okay here is the context

It mentions in Sahih al-Bukhari that:

Is the following an accurate translation (taken from online trans):

The Muslims (excepting the Prophet and some of his companions) started fleeing and I too, fled with them. Suddenly I met 'Umar bin Al-Khattab amongst the people and I asked him, "What is wrong with the people?" He said, "It is the order of Allah" Then the people returned to Allah's Apostle (after defeating the enemy)

the word used in the Arabic version is: وَانْهَزَمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَانْهَزَمْتُ مَعَهُمْ , meaning muslims lost and I lost with them, but after you read the rest of the text it seems that the battle was won by muslims, which made whoever translated this text change the word lose to flee,"The Muslims (excepting the Prophet and some of his companions) started fleeing and I too"
so by taking this context I think they meant by وَانْهَزَم to flee.
but what I don't agree with in the translation is:
ثُمَّ تَرَاجَعَ النَّاسُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
doesn't mean "Then the people returned to Allah's Apostle (after defeating the enemy)".
but means "poeple (or the troops) came back to the prophet of Allah peace be upon him"
besides the english translation is only from

Thanks once again xpsal, you've been a lot of help, appreciate it

I read about the incident of hunain, last night, and it seems that there was a retreat by the Ansar when they were ambushed by a downpour of arrows by enemy archers

According to Ibn Ishaq, Jabir Ibn Abdullah who witnessed Hunain, said:

... The men ran away except that a number of Muhajrun and Ansar and men of his family remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Muhajirun who stood firm were Abu Bakr and Umar: of his family Ali, Al- Abbas, and Abu Sufyan Ibn Al-Harith and his son and Al-Fadl Ibn Abbas, Rabi Ibn Al- Harith, Usamah Ibn Zaid and Ayman Ibn Umm Ayman Ibn Ubaid who was killed that day.

After this they returned to the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and subsequently they defeated the enemy.

lol @ Nana_Brazil .. are you translating something into smily language ?

Nana_Brazil don't worry you'll become an expert at Arabic some day inshaAllah. Personally I know very little myself.

Anyway what I posted earlier is not from the Quran, it's from Bukhari which is the most authentic book on hadith ( sayings of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wassallam) and also some Islamic history book (Seerah of Ibn Ishaq)

The incident of Hunain is mentioned in Quran also but not in detail like hadith. But the lesson is there that success ( victory ) does not lie in having great numbers ( combatants ) but solely due to Allah's Help ( they were assisted by Angels ) and Allah put calmness in their hearts. So lesson is whether we are less in number or great we should rely on Allah and seek His Help as only Allah grants victory and not numbers.

Following is from Quran:

‏9:25 لقد نصركم الله في مواطن كثيرة ويوم حنين اذا اعجبتكم كثرتكم فلم تغن عنكم شيئا وضاقت عليكم الارض بما رحبت ثم وليتم مدبرين

Assuredly Allah did help you in many battle-fields and on the day of Hunain: Behold! your great numbers elated you, but they availed you naught: the land, for all that it is wide, did constrain you, and ye turned back in retreat

‏9:26 ثم انزل الله سكينته على رسوله وعلى المؤمنين وانزل جنودا لم تروها وعذب الذين كفروا وذلك جزاء الكافرين

But Allah did pour His calm on the Messenger and on the Believers, and sent down forces which ye saw not: He punished the Unbelievers; thus doth He reward those without Faith
