Good question, Matt.
It's kind of implied that we all write name this way: Either the vowel is short or long, you write it long in Arabic. For we do not put 7arakat (those small symbols) on names. And if you don't write them, someone would read that as; bitrak, botrok, bitark, batork... See my point? So better write long vowels (alif, waaw, yaa2) so that anyone can recognize the name and pronounce it correctly.

Stas ("a" as in "apple") : ستاس
If it is pronounced more like Stacey, but without the the "ey" sound at the end: ستايس

I hope I am not mistaken
