The main reason for this is that people often fail to distinguish between culture and religion -- two things that are completely different.
That's a major problem..that some people blame Islam for what some Muslims do. Muslims come from different backgrounds, different cultures,so they might practise things that are not in islam, but ignorance of their religion and ideas implanted in them may make them think that this is Islam. And also some narrow-minded people may think, when seeing some Muslims do bad things that this is Islam.
I am a woman and I wear hijaab, and i have been asked by many non Muslims, how come a woman wears hijaab and a man does not??
My answer to them is that I can give a list of all the advantages of wearing the hijaab, but these answers are understood by Muslims becuase they know what their religion is based on. It is Allah's (God) laws, these laws have never been changed and will never be inshaAllah.

Islam is not a religion of equality, Islam is a religion of justice and peace. It has given men and women their rights that suit their gender. Even animals have rights in Islam.
If I say Islam is a religion of equality then I am excatly like a man, and also animals must have the same rights as I have.
so to a Muslim, asking the question why men do not wear hijaab like women is the same as asking why men do not dress the same as women at the beach ;p

Smile Equality means same ranking in Islam

Hii all...Wishing all a happy and blessing Ramadan

It is a fact that women and men have different physical strength and different anatomy mainly the reproductive system which has different functions but both are equally the same in Allah's dignity. Nobody can deny that.

Islam is a religion of equality, justice and peace.
It is also true as what you described that men and women have their rights that suit their gender. Even children have rights in Islam.
When Islam is a religion of equality it does not mean that a woman should act like a man or exactly like a man..Gender is ascribed that cannot be changed but in order to achive justice, equality must be obtained or maintained like same ranking system...like man and woman or even children will have the same blessings, rahmat or rewards when doing good deeds and obey Allah's commands and practise self restraint and be able to contribute to the community and society and able to be good role model or interprete the message of Islam correctly either verbally, by actions or non verbal
reactions through media or personal intentions.

It is a fact that a woman should be modest in every ways...and man too to practise self restraint for both man and woman in Islam is Allah's preference.
But of course the modestly of a woman is by the way she dressed herself up and through her personality and personal's intentions...and man too, his personality, (correct behaviour) and the way he dressed himself...in the public..and the way we carry ourselves.

But man has the duty to be a woman's provider and protector..and .it is a fact that man should not take advantage on any woman... even though the woman herself is deficit in knowledge or material wealth or cannot carry herself well...Those who obeys Allah's command has a high ranking in Allah's dignity...both for men and women...or even children.

Nobody is an angel dear Reema. For example I don't want to wear the veil so I'm free about that.
God only will ask me about my sins not men. Sorry for that.
I'm not infallible of mistakes. And my husband in future inshalla should be unreligious like Turkish men.
I believe in women's rights and freedom.
Here in Yemen men have killed a lot of girls if they lost their virginity. I know our religion has forbidden that but it has happened.
Thank you.

Assalamu aleykum, wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Reema,
I agree with your point, how come these people don't ask men to be dressed in women's swimwear for example?

But to my mind I think it all points to geographic and climatic reasoning I think that all these coverings were all required by desert hot climate, hammering sun, dusty winds, blowing bunch of sand into your face, etc.

I think at certain point in time in North Africa even male population used to cover themselves from head to toe to protect from natural things, like weather. etc.

Islam among all is also the most practical religion it saw to it that every people should be protected and safe, that's why there is requirement for ablution among other requirements before praying to keep yourself clean.

The whole procedure of ablution (washing or wudu) including filling nostrils with water and clearing them forcing the water out it means you are getting rid of sand and dust particles that otherwise might plug your lungs going through your nostrils.

Islam is the wisest religion it seeks not only spiritual but also a physical protection.

And the reason why some Muslim people who living in other non-desert areas still want to maintain the dress code of ancient Islam, just points out how they respect and cherish first founders of Islam and its initial surroundings in harsh climatic conditions.

If I may compare it with being a fan of Van Damme you would expect the guy to wear this Van Damme head-gear not Mexican wide sided hats.

And also to a guy from US here who pointed out that in the US the state is separated from Church. I don't think it's a true separation. How can you call this a separation if in every hotel room you find book of Bible spread by Gideons or whoever. It's not monastery, it's hotel room, how come they don't spread Koran books and Mahayana and Hinayana books for the sake of that same equlity they often shout about?

Hello all,
I want to point out two things
According to Islam, there are 4 different sources of legitimacy;
1 AL KITAB: QUR'AN UL KAREEM. THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF THE RELIGION
2 SUNNAH: PRACTICES AND TEACHINDS OF RASULULLAH (PBUH).This is also legitimated by Qur'an. Proclaim: "If you love GOD, you should follow me." GOD will then love you, and forgive your sins. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.3:31 (ali imran)
3. Icma' al ummah: meaning the consensus of competent scholars in the interpretation of The Qur'an and sunnah in the implication on a particular thing (i.e. a prohibition). this is also legitimated by QUr'an and the sunnah. You can ask further questions to Islam Answering | www.islamanswering.com
4. Qiyas al fukaha: meaning the comparison of judgements (hukm) for emerging instances (i.e. invention of a new kind of alcoholic drinks) this comparison is also made by competent scholars and this has nothing to do with changing the religion. The latter two can only be done if there is not clear 'hukm's for the issue, neither in Qur'an nor in Sunna.

When it comes to the veiling, it is a must for both muslim women and man. there is a little thing to do with symbolism. We do not need to even cite the ayah here. For a Muslim, they are theologically legitimate and sound prohibition. Denial of one of these is Kufr HafazanaAllah. You choose whatever you can here, since in this world we are free to choose whatever we want. But I do not know the future

Default Legitimacy of the prohibition

there are four sources of judgement in religious law (Shari'a) of Islam.
1. KITAB (QUR'AN AL KAREEM)
2. SUNNAH (PRACTICES AND TEACHINGS OF THE RASUL-THE SENT ONE- (PBUH)) LEGITIMATED BY QUR'AN FOR EX. 3:33
3. ICMA' AL UMMAH: (THE CONSENSUS OF THE MAJORITY OF THE COMPETENT SCHOLARS ON A TOPIC)LEGITIMATED BY QUR'AN AND SUNNAH.
4 QIYAAS AL FUKAHA: (IMPLEMENTATİON OF RULES ON A NEW ISSUE -LIKE LAW COURTS DO IN SECULAR LAW- i.e on the prohibitedness of a newly emerging alcoholic drink. in fact these also are rounded by the first three one)

VEILING IS AN ISSUE WHICH IS THEOLOGICALLY LEGITIMATE. ANY MUSLIM IS SUBJECT TO THE JUDGEMENT, BOTH MAN AND WOMAN. (A MAN also can not show his knees for instance)BUT IN DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS.

The judgements always belong to the Owner. WE DIDNOT GAIN OR STOLE THESE EXCELLENT CAMERAS (in a quality non measureable by megepyxels ) nor the excellent supercomputer, our body which is full of wonrous functions. this can not bacome from chance. Then we have to respect to the owner in His rules on benefit of us.

BUT YOU, AS A HUMAN BEING CHOOSE WHATEVER YOU WANT. IN THIS WORLD MAY SEEM OK (which is not). BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE OTHER OTHER ONE. FOR MORE INFO ABOUT WHY WOMEN SHOULD DRESS FROM AN ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE SEE NURSI's TWENTY FORTH FLASH.
and Islam Answering | www.islamanswering.com is a trustable web source about your questions.

About Turkey, I think you are making a hasty generalization.
Turkey is maintaining its historical status, and will do with the aid of the Lord (there are people living for His sake).

I am sorry for being excited and I apologize from those if I hurt their feelings. But I tried to ...
thank you for listening and
best regards
