Well, it all comes down on how you explain the word "religion".

For me religion means "conviction that there is a higher Being" or "belief in (a) God". Atheism would be just "conviction".

Well that's an interesting question and I guess the court has judged a specific case, which means it is not an absolute decision.

To me the question "Is atheism a religion" has a different answer following why you chose to be atheist. And what you consider being an atheist is... It also depends on how it affects the way of life and people acts.
There are several reasons why someone can be atheist.
For example: if you are atheist because you reject every other religion (and/or disagree with them), or because you just don't feel concerned enough by religious belief to follow their way of thinking, it is completely different.

I agree with Nadine when she says Atheism is a sort of "confiction"... Religion would be a belief in something great, as God...

I just had a look in the dictionary...
Religion is a whole of beliefs and dogmas difining the rapport between mankind and "Sacred" (don't how to translate "sacré" in English !! )
Well I wouldn't say atheism is a religion... It may be a conviction - but can we speak about "conviction" here? Well it's just a non adherence to specific beliefs...

Ugghhh there are 29,300,000 results for "a dog is a cat" (no quotes) in Google. It doesn't make it true.

The definition of "religion" is as follows:
a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny; "he lost his faith but not his morality"

The definition of "atheism" is as follows:
the doctrine or belief that there is no God

now if we use the word "God" or "god" as "supernatural power" (the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe; the object of worship in monotheistic religions) then it is not possible to be atheist and call it a religion

by definition religion is belief in a higher being.

Satanism is a religion. Atheism is not. Which is worse? That's for you all to decide.

En français, athéisme veut dire...ne croire en rien.
Selon moi, pour faire partie d'une religion quelquonque on doit croire en quelque chose...avoir la foi en quelqu'un ou quelque chose ...non ?
Alors, toujours selon moi, l'athéisme n'est pas une religion.

According to me, to have whatever religion one has to believe in something... being faithful to something or someone... doesn't he?
So, still according to me, atheism is not a religion.
