Sorry but I don't agree at all with that. In many cases people use to say that the one who knows the most is the one involved in the thing to be judged. The point of view from the inside is only a point of view, and other point of views, from the outside, are at least as important as the one from the inside... I would even say that the outside point of view is more important since it is how a group of people is classified in a society, how it is seen, it is known and so on...

I somewhat agree with you FD.
But here, I think that whether atheisme is a religion or not is not a fact, but rather a feeling, a personal way of understanding and living one's atheism, and therefore it is very subjective and relative to each individual.
an it is in this sense that I tend to think that an atheist would be better suited to answer this question (for himself or herself only).

I agree your opinion in the fact that religion can be defined in several ways. First, the belief in a god (or gods) or in a supernatural power which controls human destiny, in this way atheism is not a religion but if we define religion as a way of life, the atheism is a religion.
And I would like to say that atheism is a religious orientation (living without gods) so I think more that it's a religion.

You said: "therefore it is very subjective and relative to each individual" so why do you say that atheist would better answer this question?

That's right, I said that, I did not choose it, but somehow I am atheist.
We are in the case in which I don't consider I am an atheist, but a lot of people do, since I am not believing in God and do not belong to any religion.

So despite my belief, I know I am widely considered as an atheist and I cannot ignore it, this is my position in the society whether I like it or not. And I have to live with. That's what I told you earlier, that leaving the judgement of someone's position to himself is probably one of the worst thing that can happen. The only thing you can get out of it is a huge misunderstanding unfortunately often leading to fights.

But bear in mind that some people do also choose to be atheist to get out of every other religion, by conviction (which is not my case).
