They still don't get the message: the aim of this Forum is not to do homework for a bunch of lazy kids.
Are these types of posting getting more and more numerous, or do I start to be more aware of them? Is this address being passed around as the place to go to get your homework done by someone else? Three or four times today, I had to post something like "we are here to help you correct your work, not to do it for you" Several members & moderators have posted similar answers. I read only "english<-> french", but I bet the problem must be the same in the other forums. What about adding a "nice" text stating what we all spent the day repeating, and add it to the sticky on each forum? Maybe emphasize the title to something like "YOU MUST READ THAT before posting" Everytime that reminder is called for: we just post a link to it ... that will save us a lot of time & agravation. And we are saying "See, kid: nothing personal, that's the rule" We tell them "I would love to help you, but it's not allowed" ... :D when we really mean: "you lazy bum, get off your butt and do your homework" |

Okay Femuse, They don't get the message because they are all new on the forum... Unfortunately I am far from sure that sticking some post up the forums will help much.
And you know, I just remember the student I have been for years, and I was exactly the guy that would have let other people do my work, what did not make me a stupid boy... I hope so ... I am very very sure that we can learn much by watching the other do the job, that is exactly the kind of person I am. Moreover some teacher just get so extreme when the job is not done that I would somtime recommand that we do the job, just to keep students alive ![]() We just have not to do it too easily... |

OK
Basicaly we are saying the same thing. [I hope ?] You are right that most won't read the rules of the Forum. They know only one thing "Here are some suckers who are going to do our work" So, a sticky won't help. What I will do: I will have a ready written answer to some of these very obvious requests from kids who want us to do their homework without lifting a finger themselves. Nicely explaining to them why they should do their part. I hope you won't get tired of seing the same post over & over. :D |

Hi, maybe I can give you a "newbie" opinion : I don't think people realize what they're doing, they just don't think before they post, that's it ! I acciddently found this site, after I visited so many translation sites, I was starting to be really tired of searching. Maybe at first they're in the same state of mind, they're just tired, but after you warned them they have to do their part of the work, they usually don't repeat the same mistake and try at least a little to do their share. So to repeat again and again to newbies that you're not here to do their homework is very important ; but you will of course get tired of it, so maybe if it was possible to insert on every post (for the first weeks or months perhaps) in english and in french (and in other languages on the different threads) in a simple and "crude" way :
"We're not here to do your homework, but to correct your faults" "Nous ne somme pas là pour faire les devoirs à votre place, mais pour corriger vos erreurs", then I think with people reading this in front of every post (question or reply), their attitude will change, because it just didn't come to their mind at first. And we all know very few people will read a special warning even in front a every thread, or go to a special link, sometimes they just don't see it and don't mean to be lazy, they're too busy looking for the right thread... So it will only work if they see it every time they post something. And after a few weeks, they'll remember it by themselves. But I don't know if it's possible technically... We can also remind them that teachers notice easily if somebody else has done their homework, by just asking a few questions about the translation, or if they see a big difference between classwork and homework (I don't know if it's the appropriate english words... you can correct me). Now that it's so easy to find translations on the internet, or even to pay for it, teachers are even more aware of the problem and pay more attention to it. They always did by the way, to see if parents or friends didn't do the homework, they know how to spot the signs (english ?). So be brave and patient, but to do it in a more direct and harsh way is more efficient than to say it politely, it doesn't strike your mind the same way. The newbies are like babies to this site, and like babies, you need to repeat over and over before they get it. Harsh, but true ! |
