Default would you translate or not?

Hi there

I am coming around here because I would like to have members opinion concerning this:

You may have noticed that we recently faced some translation requests concerning couple stories... ie someone in the couple has suspicion that the other one is cheating and thus asks for a translation to make sure of what the other one is doing.
This concerns both married couple and or boy/girlfriend matter

would you translate in such a situation or not? you may have several answers following the case, I am waiting for your opinion

thanks for your replies anyway and thanks for voting

votes are open for a month, but the discussion is always welcomed

I think I'd do it. I know it's not my business but I'm just translating not trying to persuade either of the couple. Sometimes we translators are asked to translate things we dont share so we have to think about the consequences.

For my part, I would not like to think that I took part in breaking a relationship by translating something...

You say this is a recent subject? I met such situations allready a fw times in the russian or romanian forum. I thought things might have calmed down again.

For the question, if I'd translate or not, it would actually depend on the content. It is more a question, of the wat the story goes. (I was rather lucky, up to now, in what appeared.)

It's a good question and hard to answer, if you don't translate it's like leaving an innocent person being cheated on, a person who needs your help.
if you do translate they may end their relationship because of you, so it's really tough, what I would say is like Joe, it depends on the situation, but I really wish not to see such kind of requests in the future.

Thanks everyone for answering

well to sum up the whole thing most of you would translate only depending on the case... trying not to feel guilty and neither leave some "innocent person being cheated on".
Though I am wondering how can a translator feel guilty in such cases. I think nothing is worst than doubt... when you come with a translation request around here, that's because you lost confidence in your soulmate, then not knowing what's happening must be really hard to handle. So despite translator may be involved in a couple rupture he also clears a doubt (either founded or not which is a good thing 100% of the time)

to bernhard: I think time may matter, it's always easier to forgive something quite far in the past
