The economic prowess of China will be the most significant development in the next half-century. However, culturally and linguistically I doubt that China will be able to exert the same degree of influence. It is possible to learn to communicate orally on a very basic level in Chinese relatively easily, but progress beyond this elementary level is very difficult for most ethnic/linguistic groups and particularly for Westerners. Learning to read and write Chinese sufficiently for business and cultural purposes takes at least twice as long as most European languages.
My guess is that English will continue to be the preferred language for international communications. |

Westerners used to learn other European languages as second language, and they will say they have learned many languages and think they have known the world culture. That's wrong. now Chinese is the only ideogram language of the world. It's a very diffierent language with a special thought. If you learn Chinese language, you will master another thought.
Some English native speakers said, When they read English newspaper, they still have a few words unknow. As a native Chinese, I dare to say when I read a newspaper. I have very few word unknow. because Chinese words is composed with Chinese characters, If we haven't seen the word before, we can comprehend by Chinese characters. By the way,I have known that, In a English school, when the students learn science, it takes them much time to remember how to spell the words of nomenclature. But It doesn't cost us Chinese much time to remember the nomenclature. If you don't know it clearly, You can try to learn Chinese, then you will find the advantages of Chinese Last edited by The_FD; 07-11-2005 at 08:12 AM. |

Well of course chinese has its own advantages but every single language on earth has its advantages and inconvenients.
In most european languages you can guess word meanings since their roots, In chinese you will guess art of the meaning since the key of the character The same to remember the nomenclature, most of the time you have to remember the root of the word. Though for exemple in french there are many ways to write a single sound, which makes the spelling quite tough to handle from time to time. In chinese you cannot know how to pronounce an ideogramme when you don't know it because the prononciation is not necessarily written down. As I said each languages have its won advantages and inconvenients. That's true your way of thinking depends on your native language, and learning another one can improve it, but never change it once for all. |

A language does not have power, it's really its people that are carrying it forward. Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish did have their own days when the language "conquered" the world, when that people became strong, its language would became more important. We therefore let this question not on forums but on observation which country (carrying that language as its national language) will be stronger and greater.
