Default Torn between which language to study!

Hey everyone. I'm a college student in the USA, deciding which language to study here. My main choices are Arabic and Chinese. I have been reading about each. I am in Army ROTC, so these obviously are some of the more important languages to learn. I don't really know what to ask of you guys, I just wanted to vent!

Maybe I do have one question, is there a large Arabic-speaking population in a cold area of the world?

Since you're in the Army ROTC, I would suggest Arabic, many countries where Arabic is spoken are cold in some parts of the country, like Morocco for example, if you live in the north of Morocco you won't have any problem with the weather if you're used to cold weather, it snows in many places there, I think tunisia and libanon have some cold parts as well.

Awesome, thanks. How tough would you say it is to learn to speak Arabic? Is the grammar similar to English, stuff like that. What about writing it? I am figuring writing will be the most difficult, as it is written and read right to left, not to mention the letters are from a new alphabet! Your thoughts?

I can't deny that learning classic Arabic is a little bit tough, but speaking it is much easier, the grammar is similar to English in many aspects, sometimes the grammar of Arabic sounds easier than English, for instance the tenses in Arabic are not as many as in English, vowels are mostly omitted, so it's less likely to make a mistake writing a word in Arabic than in English, however many grammar rules in Arabic as so hard that even natives don't follow, it all depends on what level you want to reach in learning Arabic, and I know many americans who mastered Arabic, so it's up to you!
