There are five elements金、木、水、火、土that form the universe, in Chinese philosophy, which is the simplest words among Chinese characters. They mean metal, wood, water, fire and earth respectively.
Starting from these parts, we create many new words to express the universe: 铁,iron, and iron is a kind of metal, so the left part of 铁is 金's derivant钅, and the right part is actually voice part which predicts its prononciation. So if you saw any words with a 金、钅or釒as one part or component, then the word must mean a metal or something related to metal. 河,river, and river is made of water, so the left part of 河is 水's derivant氵, and the right part 可indicates the prononciation. 河he2, 可ke3, so the河and可share the same vowel "e" indeed. 地,ground, because ground is made of earth or soil, and the left part of 地is 土, and while the right part predicts its prononciation. 烧,burn, as a 火part in the left, and a 尧prononciation in the right, the word烧means burn or bake, speaking shao1. 林,a wood or forest, as two 木(wood)together, it means a gathering of wood or trees, so it means a wood. So if you see any words with 木, it must be related to wood or something made from wood. and To be Continued with more parts later... Last edited by pluiepoco; 07-20-2005 at 02:54 AM. |
