湖泊 means lake, a lake, while 湖itself means lake and 泊 means place of retained water. always we use 湖singlely to replace lake in english, but 湖泊 as a word is more literate and seems elegant in writing or poetry. But we Chinese usely speak 湖singlely.

大海da4 hai3, sea, while literally 大海means big sea
山脉shan1 mai4, mountain, while literally 山脉means strain of hills
大山da4 shan1, hill or mountain, while litteraly 大山means big hill
陆地lu4 di4, ground, land or continent
大陆da4 lu4, mainland, continent
河流he2 liu2, river
冰川bing1 chuan1, iceberg
地理di4 li2, geography, while litterally 地理means the theory of land
