Drum on Tiger Base: Unearthed in Xinyang (China) of Combatant Period

In prehistory, the generally-used musical instrument of percussion is drum. The inventor is Emperor Yellow. The Emperor Yellow made 80 drums sounding in the battle with Chi You, the noise of drums pierced thousands of miles, which astonished the enemy. This drum is copied from that prototype unearthed in Chang Tai 长台 of Xinyang(near my hometown), the seat is two tigers (whose bodies are full of scars and strips and clouds in colors of yellow, red and brown) opposed by their tails, with support in form of phoenix linked to the back of tigers. This is a dark red cloud-stripped grand drum made of tung.
There are many legends relating to drum in ancient China. When the Emperor combated the Dragon in central China, the drum had played an decisive role in the Emperor's victory. It's recorded that, the drum made by the Emperor can "be heared through 500 miles, invincible all around the world", so the Dragon is reduced. Down to the Period of Spring and Autumn, musical playing form had larger development, ensemble could be gathered besides solo, among them, the drum, roped bells, stone tickers playing together could serve a "concert of metal and stone", and the "music of drum and bell" is one of the most representative.

Stone Group Pipe: Unearthed in Xichuan County of Nanyang City (my hometown ), Henan Province, CHina
石排箫：春秋 淅川下寺楚墓出土

It was said that “箫韶九成，凤凰来仪”, i.e. displaying group pipes can bring forth phoenixes. History also records that when Sage Confucius (551--479 B.C.) heard its play, he was so intoxicated that until three months later he could not taste what was meat; he appreciated that the group pipe playing was perfect and the best. Ancient Chinese people also had overflowing praises to group pipes. The group pipes form like wings of phoenix, and sound like singing of phoenix. In form of triangle wing, quality of stone, colour of grey, mouth of evenness, and total ten pores, reduce the length of lower part of the pipes one by one, in the middle binded with raised level dou钭, it was the earliest group pipe. The ancient group pipes unearthed in Henan are of stone, bone or bamboo qualities. The stone groupe pipes unearthed in Xichuan淅川, is made from a whole block of stone, in form of thirteen arranged pipes of different lengths, and the depth of stone wall of the pipes was only 1mm wide. This accuracy of swing arrangement is remarkable till today, which witnesses the higher artial level of ancient Chinese music development and instrumental making.
《北堂书钞》对排箫有这样的描述：“像风翼，如风鸣，其形参差，长声肃箫”，陶注云：“其形象风之翼，十管 长二尺”。故排箫又称参差、风箫。
我馆这件石排箫管孔深度与管外长度不尽相同，管孔内径自最长管至最短管依次递减。除少数管口部残损过甚外， 余管均能吹出高低不同的音调。

骨笛：新石器时代 舞阳贾湖遗址出土
Bone Flute unearthed in Jiahu, Wuyang (Henan) of neolithic period
“Who is blowing the flute, dispersed in the spring wind all over Luoyang Capital?

Whoever listened to this night sound will recall his nostalgia.”

The bone flute, dating back to appx. 8000 years from now, is made of crane bone, 20cm long generally, 1cm appx. in calibre, of fixed form and regular making, on one side of the bone flute is pored 7 sound-making holes, the distance between each every two holes is almost the same, of which between the 6th and the 7th hole pored another tuning small hole, proving that the maker of bone flute had formed correct sound concept. After sound gauging, the bone flute can accompany the Hebei folk song Small Cabbage 小白菜. It's found that: Jiahu Bone Flute is structured at least 6-tone scale, or possibly full 7-tone ancient lower Zhi scale. Additionally, there is also possibility of multi-Gong playing. This unearthing leads to the mend up to pre-Qin musical history, and it also necessitates the re-valuation and re-cognition of the whole Chinese musical History perfected since its coming to being, undoubtedly that Jiahu Bone Flute is the most ancient musical instrument ever unearthed in these years.

距今8700年的骨笛，是用鹤鸟肢骨所制，上钻七孔。经测定，已经具备七声音阶结构，至今仍可 吹奏旋律。
