Chinese characters can be written by two systems, one is complex and the other is simplex. Ancient Chinese used complex Chinese characters to write, and later the Chinese characters were transformed from complex form into simplex form, by the way what I’m using now is the complex form; nevertheless, even up to date, a large number of Chinese people cannot go to school and then become illiterate, who can only speaking fluent Chinese. In Mainland China, simplex Chinese system is prevailing now, except in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, which have been developed apart from their motherland for certain time, still apply the complex form, though between the modern systems complex and simplex there is little difference I can tell.

However, Chinese characters, simplex or complex, apply modern syntax and grammars, which are completely different from what were before. Although every Chinese speaks and writes modern Chinese, the students receive systemic education including basic understanding and appreciation of ancient Chinese. Therefore, modern Chinese intellectual can still be skilled in reading ancient literature, some of whom can even form articles in ancient Chinese of classical style, you can imagine that in such a classical country where so many people continue its traditional culture with such an effort, its long-bearing culture and history can certainly be carried down upon generations.
