Hello,
i just learned that the finnish word for 'the Netherlands' is alankomaat. Does anybody know the etymology of alankomaat, or where online i can find it? I speak no finnish whatsoever ![]() (What does Käännösapua mean by the way?) Cheers, thanks Thomsiboms |

I'm no philologist, but I'll give it a shot with my amazing deductive capabilities. Since alanko is a lowland and maat is lands, one might argue that Alankomaat is something like The Lowlands. Sounds awful, but makes sense since a big portion of the Netherlands is below sea level.
Käännösapua means "help for translating". Sincerely, Hevosnaama and the dying horses of the circus on wheels |

Hello,
I think Hevosnaama has got it right, because "Nederland" means "low land", litterally ! Nadine
