Hi.. this time let`s see some regular verbs in the simple past tense which is called PASSADO SIMPLES or PRETÉRITO PERFEITO in Portuguese :

verbs in AR

CANTAR = TO SING
eu cantEI
tu cantASTE
ele/a cantOU
nós cantAMOS
vós cantASTES
eles/as cantARAM

You maintain the root CANT /, remove AR and add ei, aste, ou, amos, astes, aram.

Let`s take another Regular Verb in AR ending:


VERB SUAR = TO SWEAT

eu suEI
tu suASTE
ele/a suOU
nós suAMOS
vós suASTES
eles/as suARAM

We do the same with : saltar (jump, hop), saudar (greet), caçar (hunt), lavar
(wash).. etc..
Exercise: make the Past Tense conjugation of this list above.

There are some verbs in which past need some "reparing" :verbs with the endings: "CAR"

FICAR (to stay ** this verb has more meanings, we can see them later**), SECAR to dry)..etc.. we take letter C and change for "QU" before "E"
so..

eu fiQUEI
tu ficASTE
ele/a ficOU
nós ficAMOS
vós ficASTES
eles/as ficARAM

The same with SECAR.
Notice that in the Past Tense , only the 1st person changes.

Similar situation occurs with verbs ending in GAR in the Past Tense like :
JOGAR (to play a game), NEGAR (to deny).
Before the letter "E " they have an U added to G = "GU":

eu joGUEI
tu jogASTE
ele/a jogOU
nós jogAMOS
vós jogASTES
eles/as jogARAM

The same with NEGAR
