Ok.. this is the right place to talk about Portuguese

All right then... I just missed that one out. But a question you might be confronted to quite often... but can you explain the difference betwen Portuguese spoken in Portugal and in Brazil? The only time I was confronted to people from both countries we accorded to speak some kind of Spanish (well, I still don't speak Portuguese at all) filled with mistakes depending on our native languages... Anyway, I couldn't figure the difference when they spoke PT between each other.

Well, about ã = name is til in Portuguese, it`s just you see a native pronouncing, understand? It`s a kind of sound most foreigners cannot do it well, so imagine just explaining it as a theory
About differences.. I have wrote something here about it but I can tell you that Portuguese from Portugal is formal, different pronunciation even spelling an S for example they hold it like whistling from outside to inside lol, their entonation is kind "singing", their vocabulary is kind of different, too.
It`s like England / USA differences, understand? Portuguese came and ruled here, brought their costumes and language, but Brazilian people is a big mixture of races.
We are less formal, and we make mistakes when talking (and we know that) because Portuguese grammar is complex and very formal. Some people here say we should change our language from Portuguese to "Brazilian"
If you hear a Portuguese and a Brazilian speaking, you would notice the differences for sure.

What do ou mean by doin misakes? Isn't it the way a language evolves?
I'm starting finally to remember some examples they gave... isn't there also a difference on pronouncing the "l"? (Somehow, we came to similar differences between Portuguese vs. "Brazilian" and Russian vs. Polish. I don't remember really right now what it exactly was...)

Doing mistakes I mean doing mistakes really .. like for eg: putting pronouns (object ones) before the verb, and other grammatical mistakes.
Many Brazilians make bad mistakes and they have no idea about it. People who do not study a lot (do not spend long time at school) are the ones who make the worst mistakes.
Differences with the letter "I".. not so sure..but I guess it is the way it is spelled too making it longer and changing its sound maybe.. I cannot remember any case now...
And concerning to Russian X Polish I have no idea lol cos I do not speak both.

no PT vs BR is quite close to RU vs UKraine, PL and RU is not alike in many. Although I don't know either, I can guess that from the spelling and the geographic distances.
Also, as Nana has said, PT vs BR is just like EN vs AM, that is much perfect comparison!
And as I'm Chinese, I give you the comparison of Mainland Chinese and Taiwan Chinese or Hong Kong CHinese.
Or as you know that German to Dutch, or even much closer!

Joe, I was thinking about letter “I” you asked me and I remembered that it happens with letter “E” and maybe it caused doubts because when a PT speaks letter E he makes it long and seems speaking letter I with it.
For eg: Sr. Félax – A brazilian says “Senhor. Félix” but a PT : “Sienhorrrrr Fiéelix” - you can also notice in PT people1s pronunciation a big different when they say the letter L because, most speakers from European countries, "elevate" the tongue to pronounce letter L but in Brazil, we just say it without taking the tongue off the place, the same way we pronounce letter "U"- which is not correct I know and which causes sometimes mistakes between U and L.
Letters like R for example are also spoken differently from here, longer and vibrating the tongue. Altought letter R is a bit complex in BR. Because it is spoken differently depending on the region a Brazilian lives.
If a person lives in São Paulo city, he speaks it like Italian pulls it a bit and vibrates it a bit.
But.. in my city, which belongs to SP state and the same region as SP city is, people speak it like the Americans speaking their “R”- very strong which is considered “hilbilly” – my city is in the countryside part...but thanks God I was raised in SP city so I do not pronounce the “R” like most people here hehehehe.
In Rio, letter R is “singing “and “blowing” – it remembers a bit of Spanish – Rio is in the same region as we are.
In Rio Grande do Sul, South region – its sound is pure which it is the most appropriate, although people prefer the “carioca” (from Rio) accent .
To tell you the truth, a person who learns Portuguese has to face the Brazilian region different accents and... this occur also inside the same region....( as I told you.. São Paulo city, my city and Rio – all in the Southeast Region but with totally different accent J )
No need to cry guys lol. I think SP and Rio Grande do Sul are better because, people from Rio have a beautiful accent but it is far from the Portuguese language.
