Dear Nana,
does every letter in Portuguese pronounce? Does every s in the end of a word pronounce? like días, tudos,...? and many ES- before nouns, equivalent to S-before nouns, like espanha to spanish, estação to station.... Does the ES pronounce /es/? Last edited by pluiepoco; 07-25-2005 at 08:39 AM. |

1. While an american says SHOPPINg (does not almost pronounce G) we do.. a Brazilian who deos not know English well would say "SHOPINGUI " (pronouncing letter g) like you pronounce GUItar. But different from English, the name OCTÁVIO, you hear a Brazilian saying.. OTÁVIO (no C pronunciation). 2. All lonely consonants are pronounced here like : tablet ( TABLEt) here people say (TABLETE) besides saying the lonelly consonant, a vowel is added lol..So a Brazilian always change a bit the way of how a foreign word is spelled. 3. Letter S in a great number (**as in the plural usage ) have to be spelled) problem is many times some people do not say it but it is not correct. For eg.. some Brazilians say : NOSSA VOCÊ TEM UM OLHO TÃO LINDO!!! ( WOW YOU HAVE AN EYE SO BEAUTIFUL)- wrong - we must say NOSSA, VOCÊ TEM OS OLHOS TÃO LINDOS !! olhos = "eyes" in the plural. MEU SAPATO ESTÁ MUITO APERTADO. (MY SHOE IS VERY TIGHT) - wrong "Meus sapatos estão tão apertados"= shoes" S - like SPORT for eg.. we pronounce it a bit and depends on the region, the pronunciation is bigger. A carioca would say ISSSSSSSPORTI. ABOUT DIAS.. yes we do say the letter S BUT "TUDOS "IS NOT CORRECT .. there is no S for this word which is always in the singular form : TUDO ES - yes we say it for eg: ESTAÇÃO we say it all. Some here say ISSHHHTAÇÃO and others : ESTAÇÃO about others which we spell or not I will post everytime I`ll remember one ok?

Here where I live if a word has a c or a p in the middle it is pronounced, but as most of portuguese words lost the c in the middle of the word, it is not usual to have some:
acto (Portugal) - ato (Brazil) = act acção (Portugal) - ação (Brazil) = action accionar (Portugal) - acionar (Brazil) = activate adoptar (Portugal) - adotar (Brazil) = adopt adopção (Portugal) - adoção (Brazil) = adoption accionista (Portugal) - acionista (Brazil) = shareholder baptismo (Portugal) - batismo (Brazil) = baptism baptizar (Portugal) - batizar (Brazil) = baptize correcto (Portugal) - correto (Brazil) = correct correcção (Portugal) - correção (Brazil) = correction director (Portugal) - diretor (Brazil) = director óptimo (Portugal) - ótimo (Brazil) = great optimismo (Portugal) - otimismo (Brazil) = optimism facto (Portugal) - fato (Brazil) = fact but there are some words who didn't lose this c or p: autóctone compacto apto inepto |

not only c or p is omitted, but also r in rr, like your example:
correcto --corecto correcção -- coreção but maybe the latter are not generally used, could you explain to me? |

Well, I've never seen or heard that r was omitted in any word in Portuguese, as there are several dialects, perhaps it happens in Portungo, which I'm learning
, but I still don't know enough to tell you that. Maybe you refer to accents, to the way of speaking , well it probably happens somewhere that you speak rr as just one, but in Brazil I've never heard it. As far as I know, it doesn't exist. Sorry ![]() |
