12.5.6 THOSE means aqueles, aquelas, estes, estas - = pronome demonstrativo(Then I really don not know the EN equivalent of quanto, can you tell me?)
14.1.1 dEfinição, sorry, my mistake! Because I want to tranlate a grammatic book by my hand, I think Chinese analyse the Portugese language in a different way as European, so I'm translating the Chinese-Portugese Grammar book into a English-Portugese one, and the contents is just as I have listed in parts. may you like them. I will continue. Infact the lessons contained in the book is more interesting, but I have to translate the contents first. In the translation, I try my best to seek the commonest English equivalent of the PT grammatical words, but if I finally could not, I would resort to a literal translation -semantic Translation of the PT entries. So some entries maybe are not pleasant to read, that is just because of it. |

Ok...I see and I appreciate your hard work...but let me remember you: besides being Brazilian, I am not a Portuguese teacher lol so mistakes can happen sometimes and names of grammatical things can be confusing sometimes, even I am good at Portuguese language learning, I mean, if you are about to do a very serious work like that book I advice you to check it all later with a Brazilian Portuguese teacher,ok?
And about QUANTO- let me explain all of them to you... we have : MUITO (singular male), MUITA (singular female) = MUCH - for no countable things,etc.. MUITO and MUITA can also be used as VERY is in English. MUITOS(plural male), MUITAS (plural female) = MANY - for countable ones. QUANTO (sing. male) and QUANTA (sing. female)= HOW MUCH QUANTOS (plural male),QUANTAS (plural female) = HOW MANY *****BUT - ATTENTION TO SOME WAYS AND EXPRESSIONS IN ENGLISH WE CANNOT COMPARE AND USE THE SAME WORD IN PORTUGUESE SUCH AS: HOW OLD ARE YOU? = QUANTOS ANOS VOCÊ TEM? ( it means "how many years do you have" - if I translate it as it says in Portuguese, ok? HOW FAR IS THE HOSPITAL FROM HERE? QUE DISTÂNCIA É (or ESTÁ) O HOSPITAL DAQUI? As you can see, in some uses of HOW - we have the equivalent to QUANTO, QUANTA in Portuguese. |

12.5 relative pronouns pronomes relativos
.... 12.5.7 those quanto 12.6 interrogative pronoun pronome interrogativo .... 12.6.4 how many/much quanto yes I quite understand you, and your quoted quanto is an interrogative pron. as stated in 12.6.4 of my index; but what I really want is the quanto as a relative pron. as stated in 12.5.7 of my index. I can give you example out of my book: "When Quanto is used as relative pronoun, the antecedent is filled by indefinite pronoun such as tudo, todos and todas, for example: Soprava dum lado, do outro, e tudo quanto foi de garrancho e folha seca se juntou num canto só.(Winds blow from a side, from the other, and all those yellow leaves and dry branches are carried into a single corner.sometimes we omit the antecedent, so quanto works both as the antecedent and the relative pron: Entre quantos te rodeiam, Tu não enxergas teus pais......................... so can you give me the EN equivalent of the quanto in the context? |

LOOK: I WROTE IT IN BOLD LETTERS TO DIFFER YOURS FROM MINE, OK?
12.5 relative pronouns pronomes relativos CORRECT AND THEY ARE= O QUE, QUE, QUANDO,CUJO,. etc...... 12.5.7 those quanto -THOSE IN PORTUGUESE MEANS - ESTES , ESTAS, AQUELES, AQUELAS...= DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS . 12.6 interrogative pronoun pronome interrogativo CORRECT - THEY ARE THE SAME AS ABOVE BUT IN QUESTIONS : QUANDO? ONDE? O QUE? QUAL?..ETC...... 12.6.4 how many/much quanto HOW MANY = PLURAL SO YOU SAY "QUANTOS, QUANTAS" (M/F) BUT MUCH IS : "QUANTO , QUANTA" (M/F) BUT REMEMBER THEY ARE SINGULAR ONES OR FOR NO COUNTABLES. yes I quite understand you, and your quoted quanto is an interrogative pron. as stated in 12.6.4 of my index; but what I really want is the quanto as a relative pron. as stated in 12.5.7 of my index. I can give you example out of my book: "When Quanto is used as relative pronoun, the antecedent is filled by indefinite pronoun such as tudo, todos and todas, for example: ...BE CAREFULL...WE DO NOT MIX "QUANTO + TUDO, TODO " FREQUENTLY. IN YOUR CONTEXT IS OK BUT IT IS WRONG TO SAY LIKE THAT IN SOME OTHER CASES. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE PORTUGUESE SPEAK LIKE THAT. I KNOW THIS KIND OF JOINING (QUANTO TUDO / TODO) IN ITALIAN "TUTTE QUANTE" BUT IN BRAZIL THAT IS NOT SPOKEN. SO: Soprava dum lado, do outro, e tudo quanto foi de garrancho e folha seca se juntou num canto só.(Winds blow from a side, from the other, and all those yellow leaves and dry branches are carried into a single corner. sometimes we omit the antecedent, so quanto works both as the antecedent and the relative pron: YOUR TRANSLATION FOR "TUDO QUANTO" IN THIS SENTENCE IS NOT WRONG BUT I WOULD TRANSLATE LIKE THAT: " OS VENTOS SOPRAM (? BLOW IN THE PRESENT OR PAST TENSE? BLEW OR BLOWS? SOPRAM = PRESENT and SOPRARAM = PAST TENSE) DE UM LADO A OUTRO, E AQUELAS FOLHAS AMARELAS E GALHOS SECOS SÃO ( OR IS IT PAST TENSE?????SÃO = PRESENT and FORAM = PAST TENSE) CARREGADOS PARA UM CANTO (or ESQUINA). Entre quantos te rodeiam, Tu não enxergas teus pais. (Within those surrounding you, You did not view your parents.) CORRECT BUT WE DO NOT SPEAK LIKE THAT LOL......WE WOULD SAY INSTEAD: ENTRE TANTOS QUE TE RODEIAM...so can you give me the EN equivalent of the quanto in the context? AS I SAID.. DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU APPLY QUANTO + TUDO or TODO, SOMETIMES CAN BE WRONG AND NOT SAID AS A GOOD PORTUGUESE.IN THE CASE ABOVE, IT GIVES A KIND OF EMPHASIS, "EACH LEAF AND EACH BRANCH.." = ALL OF THEM, WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Last edited by Nana_Brazil; 06-07-2005 at 03:26 PM. |
