I know that "must" means "ter que" but how do you say that if you want to say, I must or you must? Thank you very much for your help!

Yes, Joseebela is right! You should use the verb "dever" in that case. I must - Eu devo You must - Tu deves Bye, sflor

Portuguese from Portugal isn´t an " extraterrestrial" language . If you understand Portuguese only from Brazil, I´m quite sure you´ll understand a native Portuguese from Portugal, at least the daily basic expressions used.In fact, there are differences between both, like the "tu" used in Portugal and in Spain also and the "você" (you must = você deve) in Brazil, just like you said... but this matter isn´t so hard to understand so that you can´t get it. It´s just a matter of cultural identity. It´s also true that "você" is used in Brazil but the conjugation of verbs is the same, in Portuguese from Portugal and in Portuguese from Brazil. Remember the origines of Portuguese spoken in Brazil... To check this verb´s conjugation you can take a look at: Verbix -- conjugate verbs in 100+ languages Good luck! sflor

Thank you very much!!
In my dictionaire, the verb "must" is translated in portuguese as "ter de" or "ter que" I don't remember exactly. But I did not know how to use this because "ter" normally means, "have". So if I wanted to say "I must go shopping" then it sounds strange when I say "eu tenho de ir shopping", I guess it sounds better if I say "eu devo de ir shopping" or does that all sound stupid? ;-) In fact, I travel to Brazil with Tap Air Portugal, and it is much harder for me to understand Portuguese from Portugal whereas I understand a lot in Brazil. But anyway, I love this language!!! |

1. Você deve estudar mais. (dever, obrigação) You should (have to) (must) study more. 2. Deve ter sido legal. (dedução lógica, inferência) It must have been nice. 3. Eu te devo 10 dólares. (dívida) I owe you 10 dollars. PS: "I must go shopping" (Eu tenho de ir às compras). "I must go to the shopping" (Eu tenho de ir ao shopping).
