Olá a todos! Do you remember a post I wrote here about Junine feast and the 3 saints we celebrate with it?
Today (June, 13th) is holiday in my city because the saint who people celebrate in the Junine feast is also my city patron. I mean Santo Antonio (St. Antony).
But this time, I`d like to tell you about another fact which Santo Antonio has in common here.
In the USA. for eg: there is the Valentine`s day - celebrated in February.
I could say that our Santo Antonio is similar to St. Valentine.
Let me explain it better. Yesterday June, 12th was celebrated "O DIA DOS NAMORADOS "in Brazil. It is our "Valentine`s day" celebrated in different date from the USA.
People in Portugal and Brazil call St. Antonio as : "O SANTO CASAMENTEIRO" - "the marriage maker saint", because of an old legend said that St. Antonio
when was young and a student, protected the poor ladies who did not have money to get married. Ladies who did not have money or properties to "pay" the fiancè`s family could not marry him. So, St. Antonio walked in the streets begging some money to give to those ladies. The sum of the money became the payment to the fiancè`s family and they could finally marry.
Lol it is funny isn`t it? I saw some girls years ago making "the ritual " to the saint lol. Don`t ask me now because I cannot remember what was that.
But there is a kind of a game that girls write the boys names in peaces of paper and throw them in a recipient. I am not sure lol but it seems they take one of the pieces and see the name of their future husbands. lol
For me...what is the best in those parties is the food I love eating cuzcuz, drinking "vinho quente" ( Mulled Wine) and eating some delicious typical candies.

I know you have such dish and it is different from ours.
Cuzcuz in Brazil is made in many different ways.
I prefer the one we prepare in our region.
As I have not found a good recipe on the net, I promisse you to give you mine, I just have to search it in my recipe book , ok?
But I can give you an idea by you showing some cuzcuz pics.....just take a look at them

I think in the countries around the Equator, gender ratio is less than 1:1 (male:female), so the marriage is transferred only if the female paid the male necessary money for sustaining the marriage; but for the countries far away from the Equator, the fact is that the male must pay the female these monies.
Do you think it is a little strange? Because in the South or North regions, the gender ratio is far higher than 1:1.

Well..Mr.Genius...let me see if I got you.

1. If you meant about male/ female number percentage, I could say that in Brazil for eg. female number is bigger than male one.
2. This use of the girl`s father paying a sum to her fiancè ( called "DOTE" in Portuguese) is very old and does not exist for a long time anymore.The reason for that I am not so sure, I guess it was a kind of "money savings" for the girl in the future in case of need, once she did not work. I think if the reason was this guess of mine, it was a good thing for the girl, because if she couldn`t work and have her own money, she could start her new life with a certain quantity of money garanteed and "do not depend" so much upon a man who she wouldn`t be sure if he could be a good husband to her. I say that because in old times marriages were arranged, so the boy/ girl did not know each other `s soul as they should.

In China, when a marriage happens upon a male and a female, the parents of both sides would be responsable to give money to the other side. But mainly the most necessary money is given by the male's family, which is called "聘礼", sometimes the female's parents will donate their girl with certain (not a large amount of) money as her individual savings for timely use, which is called "嫁妆". But in India and Yunnan (China), and in anyother places near the Equator, where the f/m ratio is bigger than 1:1, the to-be-married female must pay the male a lot of money necessary for future marrigage life.

I see...I have got you.
Nowadays in Brazil most women work. So, the old use of giving money to the boy`s family ended up but most wives help their husbands with their salaries in their spences.
lol so if we analize from this side this is not worth for us lol lol
