MINAS GERAIS
Hi folks! This time I`ll tell you some about a very beautiful and historical state named Minas Gerais. This state is a place where you feel inside the Brazilian history. The architecture over there is amazing and the paintings, statues specially inside the churches are great. Minas Gerais is so rich in History, food, costumes and crafts that I couldn`t tell you all of them. Capital city = Belo Horizonte Some cities in Minas Gerais: São João del Rei, Tiradentes,Ouro Preto, Mariana, Congonhas, Diamantina (name that comes from “diamante”= diamond – found there too). Cities like Tiradentes for example, which name is inspired from an important martir – Joaquim José da Silva Xavier and his nickname was Tiradentes (the one who pulls teeth out – his profession ) fought for Brazil`s independence and was hanged and had parts of his body cut in public square – on April 21st ,1792. The movement Tiradentes and other people participate, in favor of the independence of Brazil is called “Inconfidência Mineira” = Mineira(= from Minas) Inconfidence. Tiradentes city is very narrow as you can see in the picture attached here, because the time it was build, just carriages passed thru this place. Minas Gerais in Portuguese means “ General Mines “...a place where precious stones, iron, gold ... were found , taken and sent to Portugal. Precious and nice stones of different colors came from Minas. It all started because of the gold and the precious stones, made people come to Minas Gerais to work or have opportunities finding them. Many import people contributed in History, among them : Aleijadinho – nickname shows his deficience in hands but he was an extraordinary artist and made several works in churches, in gold, statues and paintings. Priest José Maria Xavier( 1819 – 1887) a very good colonial music composer, made a vast sacred song repertory known in Brazil and abroad. There are many churches and museums in Minas which tell people its History like the Sacred Art Museum among them. Another city is rich of History and it is a mineral water resort city, whose mud and water over there is good for health. There are some clinics for this treatment or places in which people go just to relax and receive its treatment as well. Another time I`ll tell you the story of “Dona Beija” a very beautiful woman who made Araxá famous for its mud and why. Cruisine A different side of Minas is food. Its cruisine is very appreciated and among them: Pão de queijo mineiro ( cheese bread fom Minas), tutu à mineira (beans, pork, eggs, other ingredients + manioc flour), feijão tropeiro, cuzcuz... Cheese, breads and candies like doce de leite, cakes, jam in jars are very good. Our Junine feast is based in Minas `s costumes and food. Last edited by Nana_Brazil; 06-12-2005 at 10:44 PM. |
