Default Brazil and its Regions II - Northeast

The North-East region includes the states of Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia, and occupies an area of 1,561,177.8 km2 representing 18.26% of the total area of Brazil. The majority of its territory consists of vast and ancient plateaux that have been smoothed by erosion.
Northeast climate is hot and humid and it does not almost rain, which makes many people, vegetation and animals of certain areas, suffer this consequence. The population of the region totals 45,924,812 inhabitants and accounts for 28.9% of Brazil's total. The backland, a vast area with a semi-arid climate, reaches as far as the coastal strip in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará. The soil of this sub-region is shallow and stony; what little rain falls is unevenly distributed and agriculture is severely limited. The typical vegetation of the backland is caatinga or arid land. In the more humid parts there are groves of palm trees, particularly the South American wax palm which can be fully processed by the local inhabitants. The São Francisco is the region's largest river and the only source of all-year round water for those who live on its banks. Below some info about some states of the Northeast.

BAHIA - which capital is Salvador -the state of the best singers and composers, the state of the street Carnival and AXÉ - "A Never-Ending Party" . The food from Bahia is also famous among them : ACARAJÉ and VATAPÁ.

RIO GRANDE DO NORTE= Three hundred and sixty five days of sunshine and an average annual temperature of 26º C make Rio Grande do Norte a highly privileged state. This is not only on account of its natural features such as beautiful beaches and dunes along its 400 kilometre coastline, but also because its air is the purest in the whole of Latin America, according to reports by NASA and the National Space Research Institute (INPE) from investigations completed in 1992.
Despite its many attractions, tourism only really developed in Rio Grande do Norte during the 1980s, with the construction in the state capital, Natal, of the Via Costeira, an eight kilometre avenue running along the coast where the city's main hotels and restaurants are situated.

ALAGOAS - The beautiful beaches of the capital, Maceió, with their blue-green sea set against a history of almost five centuries of dissent of all kinds, show the extent to which Alagoas is a land of contrasts. One of the regions invaded by the French early in the 16th century when France was in conflict with Portugal over vast areas of the Brazilian territory, Alagoas became a stage where war and peace have provided contracting scenaries.

PERNAMBUCO - land of the FREVO dance. It is one one the most beautiful places too which capital is RECIFE -beginning to be known around the world.
Fernando de Noronha Island - 550 kilometres from Recife (a little over an hour by plane), the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is made up of 21 islands and islets, which rise up from the depths of a sea which is 4,000 metres deep. The islands are 26 km2 of virtually untouched nature and are under a strict conservation regime.
The archipelago is a real paradise for swimmers and divers. The crystal clear waters, in which one can see to a depth of 50 metres, allow the visitor to study 15 of the 18 known species of coral, or simply contemplate the rich marine life.
