Explain a sentence

Hi everybody !
I would know how you explain this sentence in a good English.

" It's time for an execution, and my number is up. That's why they're pushing like hell. You can't stop it.
" We can certainly try. I want an opportunity."

It's the story who will be executed in America and he's talking to a friend.

"It's time for an execution" = people are now expecting an execution
"my number is up" = it is my fate to be chosen for that execution
"they're pushing like hell" = they [the authorities] are making a strong effort to carry out the execution"
The other sentences are clear, and I don't think I can explain them in any simpler way.
