Hello everyone. This is my first thread.

Can someone please help me in translating the Italian idiomatic expression "mettere a segno"? This is used in many different ways in Italian, e.g. to score a goal in a football match. I'd like to know specifically how would an English-speaking person translate this expression if applied to a criminal "coup": <<mettere a segno un colpo>>.

Hi, i am guessing, but i think the equivelent in english would be " to make a statement, or make a point, it literaly translates to something like " put down a sign" or i would say ......."to strike a blow".... this is to show someone has gained an important and valuable advantage over someone else.
hope this helps if not at least i tried.
