Default How do you say "snif" in English?

I have to translate a text from French to English and I really don't know how to say "snif" (like in "snif, c'est trop triste).
Any idea?

Explique-moi ce que veut dire "snif" (autant que je sache, ce mot n'existait pas il y a 40 ans quand j'ai appris le français), et je pourrai peut-être te dire ce que c'est en anglais. L'exemple que tu donnes semblerait indiquer une expression de regret ou de sympathie (si ce n'est pas ironique??)

snif est une onomatopée lorsqu'on pleure le nez coule un peu et on fait "snif, snif" d'où l'expression: tu es partie loin, snif !

mais tu as bien déduit Mikel

Yes, exactly. As a slang term, one could just say "sniff!" or "sigh!"

Yes, in english we use "snif" in the same way.
