Voici mon devoir :

"Put the verbs and modal auxiliaries in brackets in the right tense and form (simple or continuous, active or passive).

That morning, after my late start, I found Lucy-amma chopping at high speed with her eyes half-closed. She has cooked (cook) since the turn of the century. The place where she was born (be born) had turned from village to jungle and back to village, time and again, over her seventy-odd years. The whole country was turned (be turned) from jungle to paradise to jungle again, as it was (be), even more barbarically, in my own life. Some nights I would sit (will sit) on the floor beside her and listen to stories of the old days. She knew (know) Mr Salgado as a child while she brought up (bring up) her own, and his father was a child when she was (be) one. She served ( serve) Mr Salgado’s grandfather whisky and coffee during the riots of 1915. She saw (see) politicians with handlebar moustaches and tortoiseshell topknots, morning coats and gold-thread sarongs, barefoot and church-shod. She saw (see) monkey-suits give way to Nehru shirts ; Sheffield silver replaced (replace) by coconut spoons. But her cooking and her wood-stove, 2 black stones outside the kitchen-remainded timeless. The rice still taken 20 minutes to cook, and if the lid was lifted before the dimples appeared all would be (will be) lost ; and, she explained, you still couldn’t tell (can’t tell) a fresh coconut without shaking it, and you couldn’t make (can’t make) a pool-sambol without breaking it. Culinary taste was not fickle, she would say (will say), and the way you swallow food, like the way you make (make) babies, don’t change (change not) throughout the history of mankind."
