Default tea cup, teacup, tea-cup

Hello everyone

I'm workinf on a translation and I'm not sure I understand fully the meaning of the following.

In the storory I'm working on, a visitors come to the house of a buddy who is a bit of a philosopher and asks him:

"So, tell me, man, if a tea cup is only a tea-cup because we say it's a tea-cup, what is a teacup?"

I have a good idea of what this is supposed to be, but just to make sure: is there really a difference between tea cup, teacup and tea-cup?

Thank you
