ah ok!

Compulsory education
Education attendance is compulsory from the age of 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) until 16. Primary school goes from 5 to 11 yo. In England, some LEA have a first school system (5 to 8/9 years old) and then middle school (8/9 to 12/13 yo). Secondary education (11 to 16 yo) is dependant on public funds and have two different kinds of schools; "comprehensive schools" that give a general education to pupils and "grammar sdchools" (England and Northern Irland) which give an education more based on academism and selection. Secondary specialized schools are "comprehensives schools" specialized in a given field of the program... as technology for example, while they still teach every other point of the general official program. A lot of secondary schools also have classes for young people aged between 16 and 18, who don't have to go to school anymore.

Parents are free to choose any school for their children. Local power (or school direction) plans admission. Parents can appeal in case a position remains empty in a school they chose. Grammar schools are the only schools that select children following their skills (in January 2000, there were 162 grammar schools in England and 72 in Irland, representing approx 5 and 30% of secondary schools total).

Scolarship organization
School year goes from August/September to June/July depending on the area. Schools have to be opened 190 days a year, they usually open 5 days a week (monday through friday). Recommended schedule in NEgland and Wales is 21hh for 5/7 yo, 23.5h for 8/11 yo and 24h for 12/16 yo. Scholar day usually lasts from 9am to 3/4 pm. Course duration varies and is under school control.

5/7 years old classes (4/8 in Ireland) are limited to 30 pupils per class. There is no recomendation for other classes. In Primary school, pupils skills are heterogeneous. In secondary schools pupils are gathered following there skills in given courses or in a more general matter.

The Program
Compulsory education is divided into 4 main steps:
number 1 (5/7 yo or 4/8), number 2 (7/11 yo or since 8 in Northern Ireland) number 3 (11/13) and number 4 (14/16). There is no official school book, teachers choose their own methods and educational tools.

Compulsory courses:
A foreign language is compulsory since step number 3 (step 4 in Wales). Note: In England, pupils can stop their foreign language since step number 4 (under certain given conditions). In step 4 there are less compulsory courses.
