Bonjour ,
Voila ,porriez-vous m'aider à la traduction des phrases en gras de ce texte ??..svp..:

She took her mind dwelling after dwelling she'd been to , relations'homes , her own childhood home , friends . But no . It was bookless . She thought why ? Almost in anguish . Why are Maoris not interested in books ? Well , they didn't have a written language before the white man arrived , maybe that was it . But still it bothered her . And she began to think that it was because a bookless society didn't stand a show in this modern world , not a damn show .And I live in it , don't I ? And my kids .

merci d'avance

salut,
Quote:

Elle repensa à chaque endroit où elle avait habité, les maisons des membres de sa famille, la maison où elle avait passé son enfance, ses amis.

Well , they didn't have a written language before the white man arrived , maybe that was it.
Bon, ils n'avaient pas de langue écrite avant l'arrivée de l'homme blanc, c'était peut-être pour ça.

Quote:
a bookless society didn't stand a show in this modern world , not a damn show .
to stand a show = je ne connais pas, mais je pense que ça a plus ou moins le sens suivant = pouvoir jouer un rôle
alors peut-être:
--> une société sans livres n'avait aucune chance dans ce monde moderne, vraiment aucune chance.
--> ne rimait à rien dans ce monde moderne, etc.

Just my two cents.

The above paragraph was about the writer's search for book in everybody's home but she couldn't find any. She was asking herself why? The answer she figured out was "It's a bookless society. Books are not popular."

The phrase "didn't stand a show" compares books to a drama play or a movie,
that is so unpopular that it has to be taken off after one show, since it can't even stand the test or time of one show.

Btw, I don't think "that" is needed in the sentence "And she began to think that/ it was because/a bookless society didn't stand a show in this modern world /, not a damn show ."

I've separated the above into several clauses and phrases. "A bookless society didn't stand a show in this modern world /, not a damn show ." is a sentence on its own. The clause "it was because" is added to this sentence, explaining the reason that follows.

Hope this exxplains.

Dear all,

Sorry, I've made a terrible mistake with the subject. The subject should be "a bookless society", not "books". Thus the meaning should be opposite.

Thus, the writer is discontented with her Maori bookless society she's in. She can't find books in the Maori society, where she is in and her kids will grow up in, and she is worried. In her opinion, a bookless society is impossible in the modern world.

"And still it bothered her. She began to think it was because a bookless society did not stand a show in this modern world, not a damn show." - A bookless society can't stand a show, put up a show/performance (I agree with Catachrest's definition from the Oxford Dictionary on this instance).

Sorry, I thought over the sentence and realised my mistake, because I made a mistake with the subject of the sentence. I hope I've got it right this time.
