Patrick spent the night locked up in his room. He amused himself with a book or two, but near one in the morning, even the tale of swordplay and battles failed to hold his attention. Seeking some form of amusement, he looked out his window and towards the neighbors'. In a room downstairs, a light was burning. For years, Patrick had spent his childhood looking out his window at the house next door. There was something intoxicating about the view.


Perhaps it was that the light never went off, even in daylight. Maybe it was that no one seemed to go into that room. Or, could it be that there was a secret to be found within the neighbors' house? Whichever the reason, Patrick had found amusement in simply watching the house next door. It was a nice house. Three stories high, white with dark green trim. The shutters were perfectly painted and placed. The eves and gutters were always clean and devoid of the maple leaves that filled his own family's.
