En effet, ces terrains sont ceux dont personne ne veut, parce qu'ils sont insalubres, humides ou pollués. Les maladies comme la typhoïde et le choléra y sévissent couramment. Si ces zones concentrent la pauvreté et vivent avant tout de l'économie informelle, leurs habitants ne sont pas toujours totalement démunis. En Afrique ou en Inde, des salariés n'ont parfois pas d'autres solutions pour se loger.
