Boujour je m'appelle Sarah, j'ai besoin de traduire quelques pages du francais a l'anglais mais je bloque completement sur ce passage surtout qu'il y a beaucoup de mots que je ne connais pas en francais (je suis espagnole) j'espere que quelqu'un pourra m'aider! merci de votre gentillesse et de votre patiente...


La quarantaine maintenant bien sonnée, ayant femme et enfants, il ne faisait rien dans l’existence- si par rien on entend : se promener, lire, rencontrer les gens les plus divers, discuter, s’informer du plus petit événement, suivre telle ou telle intrigue. Et ce, pour le plaisir. Uniquement pour le plaisir. Niant la nécessité d’exercer une profession reconnue, partant, de se plier a la tache astreignante de gagner son pain, il ne cherchait pas davantage à tire profit des affaires, parfois prodigieuses, auxquelles il se trouvait mêlé grâce précisément à tout ce qu’il savait. Et l’on faisait appel a lui plus souvent qu’il n’y paraissait. Seulement il se décidait quelquefois à accepter certains cadeaux, ou des sommes d’argent- ses concitoyens ne savaient pas encore offrir des livres.

Par change pour lui et pour le reste de la famille, l’aîné de ses fils, un garçon de seize ans, sérieux et entreprenant, travaillait déjà et assurait a tous la « matérielle ». Il fournissait son pere en argent de poche à l’occasion. Ils n’avaient pas de loyer a payer, la délicieuse maison qu’ils habitaient dans un quartier retiré de la vieille ville leur appartenant.

Il n’est pas tout à fait exact d’ailleurs de dire qu’il n’avait jamais travaillé. Il y eut une période de son existence, certes assez éloignée ou il pratiqua le métier de maroquinier.

Now well in his forties, with a wife and children, he did nothing at all, if by nothing one means: going for walks, reading, meeting the most different people, discussing, learning about the smallest event, following this or that plot. An all of this for fun. Just for fun. Denying the need to work at any known job, and consequently, to apply himself to the exacting task earning a living, he no longer sought to gain any profit from any ventures, some of them indeed rather substantial, that he found himself involved in precisely because of all that he knew. And he was called on for help more often than one might think. He only decided to accept certain gifts sometimes, or some money, his fellow citizens still didn't think to offer him books.

Fortunately for him and the rest of the family, his oldest son, a 16 year old boy, serious and enterprising, was already working and provided them with all material needs. He gave his father some pocket money on occaision. They had no rent to pay, because they owned the fine house in a secluded neighborhood in town that they lived in.

Besides, it wasn't precisely true to say that he had never worked. There was a time in his life, a while ago to be sure, when he worked as a leather goods manufacturer.
