well canadian french and french french do understand each other 100%. Basically there is just a different accent and some different sayings, but nothing to worry about

Smile Canadian French vs. French French

Hi Zeloguy

As an English Canadian I'm not the best person to describe the differences, but I do know there are some. Just as I have a little difficulty listening to a person speaking a country dialect in England, you would at first have to ask people to repeat themselves, but after a little while your ear would become attuned to the differences. An English-Canadian visiting Australia would also have to become accustomed to the local manner of speaking, so a phrasebook for Aussie slang is very helpful!

I understand that some of the words used in Canadian French are ones that have long since gone out of usage in France, because they were brought over when French settlers first inhabited this country centuries ago and have continued in popular use here. You may find that intriguing.

But for day-to-day use, such as reading signs and menus and having conversations with people you meet here, I'm sure you'd be just fine. By all means don't let the minor differences in accent and terminology stop you from visiting!

Hope this helps you.
