to become aware of = prendre conscience de.

Today, I’m going to speak about a very much discussed item in the world : Water, a major issue. Indeed, water is one of the main resources which contributed to develop life on Earth; A bad exploitation of this element can lead to human extinction. I / First of all, Water is a vital element in danger 1/ On the one hand, ice melting is essentially due to the global warning. For instance, in the North Pole, ice will have totally disappeared in summer. British scientists, who come back from this part of the world, alert us very frequently. According to their opinion, the ice field in the Antarctic will have entirely disappeared in twenty or thirty years and could be replaced by a maritime way. Moreover, Marie-Noëlle Houssais, a CNRS oceanographer, notices that in Greenland, the ice filed is melting at a rate of three hundreds cubic meters/year. But it’s not an isolated example. In the Alps, the constant move back of the glaciers is just as well impressive and charged of consequences. On the other hand, human mistakes are also at the origin of water problems : wasting and pollution. A flagrant example of wasting : Las Vegas. In this town, situated in the middle of the desert, the authorities spend water on creating big and magnificent fountains instead of sparing water. Another example is pollution which increases global warming. II/ Secondly, water itself represents a source of danger for human beings. 1/ Some great towns like London, Amsterdam will totally disappear from geographical maps due to the rise of the oceans. Moreover, not only agriculture but also breeding will have to adapt themselves to these changes. We can imagine how it will be difficult for animals and for the nature in general. 2/ On the contrary, we can notice that reserves of drinking water are less and less important. To mention this anomaly, the conference of Istanbul took place in Turkey on the sixteenth of March 2009. “How to keep millions of persons in healthy conditions without having drinking water.” The exhaustion of natural drinking reserves is actually the first cause of mortality (death) in the world. We also depend on the degradation of the glaciers which will no longer constitute a sufficient reserve for water alimentation. 3/ Besides, we can notice a bad geographical repartition of water. It becomes more and more difficult to access to drinking water in such continents as Africa. Africans must sometimes walk during hours that means several kilometres to go and find water. And things are going worse year after year, according to recent researches : from seventy five to two hundreds and fifty millions of persons will miss water in ten years. III/ 1/ At least, different measures exist to solve this problem. Some of them have already been taken. Let’s take the example of Israel which is succeeding in stopping desertification. Other countries have chosen to fight against global warming. 2/ That’s the reason why, other actions must be still developed. Everybody must feel concerned by the fact we must spare water and not waste it. Conclusion : Will all these initiatives be enough to assure our survey? A lot of countries and associations think it is possible, so, all together, we’ll succeed. |
