Dear friends,
could someone of you please help me, having a look at the following phrases. They were done by a translater who is "mother-tongue speaker" but to me, nevertheless, they sound a bit strange to me. "Great need" = großer Bedarf, here great sounds a bit overwhelming to me?? headline of an article: "xx gets the blues". Does the "gets the blues have to stand in brackets? As it is a cutsomer magazine in metalworking branch it isn´t used so much. "xx saves during countour milling" = xx sparte beim Konturfräsen. The during is translated very free. Wouldn´t it be better to say "at"? What does "Aufschmierung" (a material sticks up to the tool which machines the working material) mean in English please? The translater said "to gum up" but this is used only in connection with plastics, isn´t it? WE are working in metalcutting. "the IBM complete service" = der IBM Komplettservice. Sounds also translated very free to me. What does "Standweg" mean. The translator offered "tool life travel". The word travel sounds a bit strange to me. "There´s still a lot possible for drilling" = Es ist noch viel möglich beim Bohren. ?? Sounds strange in English. Is it better to say "clamping chips" or "jamming chips"? What does "Hohlschaftkegel" and "Hydrodehnspannfutter" mean in English. The translator gave me hollow shank tapers and hydro expansion chucks. ?? What is the translation for MMS = Minimalmengenschmierung in English? (also the abbrev. please) When a customer offers a range of product is this called a "product line" or a "product programme" when I use this in the presentation of this customer? What does "Mehrstufenwerkzeug" mean in English. "Muli-lip combination die"? What does "Spanraumgeometrie" mean? "Chips space geometry"? Is it better to say "much less expensive or "cheaper" in a headline of a column? Should mean "deutlich günstiger". What does "Werkzeugeinsätz" on the sense of the use of the tool in several applications mean? "tool uses"? What does "zukunftssichere Technologie" mean in English? "Technology with a guerantueed future"? What does "Standmenge" mean? "Tool life quantity" Does "clerk" or "person in charge" sound better (higher level)? What does "Rissneigung" mean? "tendency to crack"? Do you say "by a factor of something or "by factor of" (without the "a)? What does "Abdrängung" mean? "anti-penetration"? What does "Überreichung" mean. "Presentation" Im sorry for asking so many phrases. But we are doing correction of a translators work. Thaaaaaaank you very much for your help. Trudi |

Servus Trudi,
Ich bin kein Fachmann im Bereich Maschinenbau, einige von den allgemeinen Fragen kann ich dir doch beantworten: Great need" = großer Bedarf sounds OK to me. headline of an article: "xx gets the blues". Does the "gets the blues have to stand in brackets? As it is a cutsomer magazine in metalworking branch it isn´t used so much. Yes, because it's a colloquial (Umgangssprache) term. "xx saves during countour milling" = xx sparte beim Konturfräsen. The during is translated very free. Wouldn´t it be better to say "at"? I'd stick with during What does "Aufschmierung" (a material sticks up to the tool which machines the working material) mean in English please? The translater said "to gum up" but this is used only in connection with plastics, isn´t it? WE are working in metalcutting. I think gum up would work here too. "There are still many possibilities/options for drilling" = Es ist noch viel möglich beim Bohren. ?? Sounds strange in English. When a customer offers a range of product is this called a "product line" or a "product programme" when I use this in the presentation of this customer? As an American, I'd say "product line," product programme may be correct British English; I don't know. Is it better to say "much less expensive or "cheaper" in a headline of a column? Should mean "deutlich günstiger"= considerably less expensive, cheaper is less formal. What does "Werkzeugeinsätz" on the sense of the use of the tool in several applications mean? "tool uses"? I agree What does "zukunftssichere Technologie" mean in English? "Technology with a guerantueed future"? I agree Does "clerk" or "person in charge" sound better (higher level)? Person in charge would be a foreman, supervisor, or boss, ein "clerk" ist ein Verkaufer, dh, jemand, der die Kasse bedient. i What does "Rissneigung" mean? "tendency to crack"? OK, or tendency to break Do you say "by a factor of something or "by factor of" (without the "a)? by a factor of Fuer die anderen Begriffe brauchste noch mehr Kontext, oder einen Fachmann in Maschinenbau/Metallurgie. |
