"the power of love" would be translated as "prem dee shakti"
prem= love
dee= 's
shakti= power

In Punjabi script it would ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ .

hope this helps

My Sikh grandfather gave me the name 'mali' (using an american pronunciation), and I would like to see it in his native punjabi, can someone translate for me?

He originally translated it for me as "peacock" in english or "keeper of the gardens" so is the word for gardener ਮਾਲੀ appropriate? The word for peacock ਮੋਰ looks more like what I remember his handwritten notes looked like.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Prem!

Dear Prem,

I checked the Punjabi University Dictionary and ਮਾਲੀ means many things including gardener so that word is appropriate.

It does not list "peacock" as a meaning and so I do not think it means peacock. You are correct with ਮੋਰ meaning peacock.

Hope this helps,

GS

Dear Charan Jee,

Charan would be written as ਚਰਨ and it means "feet". Putting it into context it's God's feet and it conveys the idea of being humble. There is a shabad in Sri Guru Granth Sahib on page 534 written by Guru Arjun Dev Jee. One of the lines goes "raj na chao, mukt na chaaho man preeth churun kumulaarae".Sahib Singh translates this "Oh Beloved Lord! I do not want rule, I do not want liberation may only my mind be in love with your Lotus Feet". It's a metaphor. The feet are the lowest part of the body, hence to forego rule and liberation for the Guru's feet is an act of humility.

"The love for his mother" would be translated as ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ the transliteration of which is : "aapnee maa nal piaar"

A very good website for learning Punjabi is this one: Online Punjabi Teaching

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
