I’m trying to get some feedback about the following basic computer terms in day to day usage in Tamil. If anyone is able to let me know how (if at all) these words are translated and/or transliterated in common use, I would sincerely appreciate it. address browser click clipboard Computer copy create download drag file find font help home page internet memory open operating system save WWW (world-wide-web) web page web site Thanks, Sonya |

most of the computer terms in tamil seems to be given in English, as english is one of the national languauge in India
Although i can try to translate some words, not the most technical, into Tamil Do you want them in Tamil fonts?

Tamil fonts would be fine (they're really beautiful), but what I'm trying to determine is how native speakers would use these terms when conversing with other native speakers. Are Tamil equivalents used or is use of English more common? I have a Tamil dictionary that gives the prescritpive terms, I just can't seem to discover if they're used or not.
Thanks! |

Indians often use foreign ( almost english) words when they speak enven in their native language!
one must know that indians speak at least 2 or 3 languages: the native , regional one, the offical, national one (hindi) and for a great part of them the international one ( english) even in tamil newspapers , you can find, articles or ads in english and same for english regional newspapers, articles or/and ads in tamil ![]()

Tamil is a rich language. The language has grown in tune with the nature. The Total ignorance by the fellow Tamils is the result of this foolishness. There is no need to use foreign words when the Tamil language has them all. New words can be coined easily. There is no need for the Tamils to speak the Offical language 'Hindi' in Tamil Nadu. This is pure discrimination. The TN Tamils don't know Hindi. Many of them (80%) live in villages and only know Tamil. The Tamil medias are controlled by those who are illiterated on Tamil. As a result, you see and listen to impure Tamil words. The reason why the Tamil language hasn't developed in to computer because of Indian Educational policy. Indian Education system restrict a native language from developing it self in to the Technological and science mainstream. It wants everyone to feel 'INDIAN' but it promote DEAD language Sanskrit and the so called 'Official language' Hindi. Sanskrit came from Prakrit, Tamil and Indo-European roots. Tamil language is being spoken by more than 80 million Tamils but there is no basic Tamil keyboard layout. If and should Tamil develop in term of Technology and Science, then Tamils should be allowed to learn these things using their mother tongue (Tamil) in Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu is a state in India, also known as TN). Long Live TAMIL! Last edited by Tamil; 04-01-2006 at 01:07 AM. |
